Tesla Masterplan Part 2 Due Out Soon, Tesla CEO Tweets

PALO ALTO, California — Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk teased the unveiling of "top secret" Tesla Masterplan, Part 2 in a tweet on Sunday, unleashing speculation about whether he will be revealing plans for new products.

The tweet read: "Working on Top Secret Tesla Masterplan, Part 2. Hoping to publish later this week."

No further information was provided by the Silicon Valley electric carmaker. But the speculation about the updated master plan included a "car that can fly," an "ebike" and an "Iron Man suit" by Musk's Twitter followers.

Another wag suggested that a Tesla-branded cologne was in the works. "You could call it Elon Musk," he wrote.

This is the second reference by Musk to a Tesla Masterplan.

An August 2, 2006 blog post by Musk laid out the blueprint for what would become the Tesla Model S and 2018 Model 3. The Model 3 is expected to arrive in Tesla stores by late 2017.

At that time, Musk wrote: "As you know, the initial product of Tesla Motors is a high-performance electric sports car called the Tesla Roadster. However, some readers may not be aware of the fact that our long-term plan is to build a wide range of models, including affordably priced family cars.

"This is because the overarching purpose of Tesla Motors (and the reason I am funding the company) is to help expedite the move from a mine-and-burn hydrocarbon economy towards a solar electric economy, which I believe to be the primary, but not exclusive, sustainable solution."

Sunday's tweet follows several roller-coaster weeks for Tesla.

The company is under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board for a fatal May crash involving a Tesla Model S sedan that was on the Autopilot semi-autonomous mode. Tesla also recently announced that it had delivered fewer cars during the second quarter of 2016 than expected.

Edmunds says: Regardless of what ends up in Tesla's Masterplan 2.0, Elon Musk is a master at grabbing the attention of the media — and car shoppers.
