Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman Teased in New Video

STUTTGART, Germany Porsche is teasing the return of the 718 nameplate on the upcoming Porsche Boxster convertible and Porsche Cayman coupe in a new YouTube video.

"The legend 718 is about to return," the German automaker said.

The 718 name was last used on a Porsche racecar. The video highlights the contemporary 718's racing roots.

Car shoppers who are unfamiliar with the 718 designation, which refers to a ground-breaking sports car Porsche introduced in 1957, are treated to some footage of the car in several races.

Porsche built the midengine 718 from 1957-'62 as a successor to the 550 Spyder.

Porsche has not confirmed if the new 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman will carry the 2016 or 2017 designation. The two will be renamed following a midcycle update in 2016.

It is not clear if they will debut at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show or at a subsequent event.

Both will use turbocharged four-cylinder engines, but U.S. launch timing, pricing and technical specifications have not been announced.

Porsche said the Boxster will be positioned at a higher price level than the Cayman.

The Boxster targets the BMW Z4 and Jaguar F-Type, while the Cayman competes against the BMW M3 and Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.

Edmunds says: Porsche whets car shoppers' appetites for the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman with this teaser video.
