WASHINGTON General Motors is recalling 56,214 Saturn Aura sedans because the transmission shift cable may fracture, leading to a rollaway risk, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Vehicles equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission have a condition in which the transmission shift cable may fracture at any time.

"If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the driver will not be able to shift the lever to the 'Park' position, or remove the ignition key," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "If the vehicle is not in the 'Park' position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders."

The affected Auras were built from April 24, 2006 through October 31, 2007.

GM Spokesman Alan Adler told Edmunds the automaker is aware of 28 crashes and four injuries but no fatalities over the last seven years. The vehicles previously were covered by a 10-year/120,000-mile extended warranty. Other similar vehicles were subject of a safety recall in 2012.

A date has not been set for the recall.

GM dealers will replace the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket. Owners can contact GM at 1-800-553-6000.

Edmunds says: If you have any immediate concerns while you're waiting for your official recall notice, it's best to contact your local GM dealer. The Saturn brand no longer exists, but GM dealers can handle any concerns with the car.
