Rolls-Royce To Launch Super-Luxury SUV

NEW YORK — Shifting gears in a dramatic way, Rolls-Royce on Tuesday said it will build its first super-luxury SUV.

"Many discerning customers have urged us to develop this new car — and we have listened," the automaker said in a statement.

The unnamed Rolls-Royce SUV targets a growing number of luxury SUVs, including the 2016 Bentley Bentayga, 2016 Jaguar F-Pace, 2015 Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Land Rover Range Rover.

Rolls-Royce did not use the term "SUV" in its statement. Instead, it said it will roll out "a car that offers the luxury of a Rolls-Royce in a vehicle that can cross any terrain." It cited such "pioneers and adventurers" as Lawrence of Arabia in its announcement.

The Rolls-Royce SUV will be a "high-bodied car, with an all-new aluminum architecture."

No further details were offered and pricing was not announced. There is no word yet on when the Rolls-Royce SUV will debut at U.S. Rolls-Royce dealerships. But the new Rolls-Royce has its own hashtag: #EffortlessEverywhere.

The SUV will join a Rolls-Royce lineup that includes the Rolls-Royce Phantom sedan, the smaller Ghost sedan and the Wraith coupe.

Edmunds says: Luxury shoppers with deep pockets will be lining up for the new Rolls-Royce off-roader as the company enters a hot market segment.
