WASHINGTON Chrysler Group is recalling 434,581 2011-'14 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Durango, Dodge Challenger, and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles because the alternator may fail, leading to engine stall, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

"If the alternator fails, the vehicle may stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem.

The affected vehicles were built from June 17, 2010 to December 23, 2013. They are equipped with a 3.6-liter engine and a 160-amp alternator.

Chrysler said it is aware of one potentially related accident, but no injuries or fires.

The recall is expected to begin on November 28. A remedy for the problem is still under development, according to NHTSA. Owners can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

"All affected customers will be notified next month by Chrysler Group and advised when they may schedule service," the company said in a statement on Thursday.

Another 16,080 of the affected vehicles are in Canada; 2,335 are in Mexico and 17,000 are outside of the NAFTA region.

Edmunds says: If you own one of these vehicles and are experiencing a problem, it's best to contact your dealer immediately.
