AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — The 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth and Abarth Cabrio sold in the U.S. will feature an optional six-speed automatic transmission, Chrysler said on Monday.

The cars will be on display at the 2014 New York Auto Show.

Fiat said the automatic transmission will "broaden the customer base for the high-performance version of the Fiat 500."

The 2015 Fiat 500 lineup will arrive at dealerships in July.

"We are not yet announcing pricing for Abarth/Abarth Cabrio ATX," wrote Ariel Gavilan, a Fiat spokesman, in response to an e-mailed query from Edmunds.

The new automatic transmission — an Aisin AW6F25 six-speed — is an option to the standard five-speed manual transmission on the cars.

Chrysler said the Sport mode calibration on the automatic transmission "allows for an even more engaged driving experience with special features such as fuel-cut upshifts, rev-matching downshifts, brake-assist downshifts, corner gear hold and fast-off gear hold, as well as a more aggressive pedal map."

Both automatic and manual transmission options for the 2015 Fiat Abarths will be paired with the 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder engine.

Chrysler also announced that most versions of the 2015 Fiat 500 will get a new 7-inch electronic display in the instrument cluster. The new display "allows drivers to easily monitor data like speed, fuel level, Eco index and trip information," the automaker said.

The new display will be standard on the 2015 Fiat 500 Sport, Lounge, Turbo and Abarth models, and optional on the Pop.

Other interior updates for 2015 include a redesigned center console with a new cupholder design and an additional USB port that is integrated with the radio. The 2015 Fiat 500 models will also include Bluetooth streaming audio in addition to the standard Bluetooth phone connectivity.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers who have skipped the Fiat Abarth because it lacked an automatic transmission can now get into the high-performance models.
