DETROIT — The 2016 Bentley Bentayga, the British brand's first SUV, will arrive at Bentley dealerships next year and make new inroads into the luxury market.
A Rolls-Royce SUV had been under consideration, but Bentley clearly outpaced that competitor.
The automaker has already taken deposits from 4,000 prospective owners of the Bentayga.
The unusual name is derived from the Roque Bentayga in the Canary Islands.
"Bentayga is a name that reflects what we know our SUV will do better than any other car in the world — combine the best automotive luxury with outstanding performance to take the Bentley experience to new environments," Bentley said in a statement.
Bentley dealers are preparing to sell the new SUV to new clientele, alongside such storied models as the Bentley Flying Spur, Continental and Mulsanne. The Mulsanne is expected to retain its position as the most expensive Bentley, with a price tag exceeding $300,000.
Edmunds says: The long-awaited Bentley SUV gets a name and buyers get to put a new luxury SUV on their shopping lists.
