MUNICH — The 2015 BMW i8, a plug-in hybrid sports car that is part of the German automaker's i lineup of electric-drive vehicles, will debut at October's 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, BMW confirmed on Friday.
The BMW i8 is spun off the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept shown in 2009.
BMW has not released any specifications for the all-new i8, which is expected to go on sale sometime in 2014.
"The BMW i8 is a contemporary sports car perfect for everyday driving," said BMW in the announcement of the i8's Frankfurt-show debut. "It combines the performance of a sports car with the consumption of a small car. Thanks to its plug-in hybrid drive, the majority of its day-to-day driving is possible in emission-free, fully electric mode."
BMW said the i8 premiere will be its key highlight at the Frankfurt show. Also on display will be the BMW 4 Series Coupe, X5 and Concept Active Tourer Outdoor.
Visitors to the auto show will be able to test drive BMW cars on an infinity-shaped track that will dominate the BMW stand.
Edmunds says: BMW isn't resting on its laurels after an attention-grabbing debut in late July for the i3. Look for the BMW i8 to hog the spotlight in Frankfurt.
