DETROIT — Car shoppers who are obsessed with statistics will undoubtedly be interested in the numbers game for the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.
Corvette Product Manager Harlan Charles detailed the latest 'Vette statistics, confirming to Edmunds that production of all 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray models has totaled 37,288 units.
That figure makes 2014 model-year production the 14th highest in Corvette history and represents the most Corvettes manufactured in a single year since 2007, when 40,561 were built. The number of 'Vettes produced in the three years prior to the 2014 model year totaled 38,709, combined.
"The 2014 Stingray has been incredibly successful for us," said General Motors spokesman Monte Doran. "This year's production of the new C7 (the code name for the car) is nearly triple the last year of the C6."
Doran believes part of the success can be attributed to the wider choice of transmissions now being offered on the high-performance Corvette models.
He said: "Customers told us they wanted the Z06 and Z51 models but wanted them with an automatic transmission. We think more people will opt for these models now that automatics are available."
The 2014 Corvette Z51 is available with a paddle-shifted six-speed automatic transmission. For 2015, both the 460-horsepower Z51 and the new 650-hp Z06 will be available with an eight-speed paddle-shifted automatic.
Harlan Charles confirmed for Edmunds that of the 2014 Corvettes produced, the largest share, 65 percent, were equipped with the current six-speed automatic transmission, while the remainder were outfitted with the seven-speed manual.
Charles also verified that 41 percent of those built were Z51 coupes, 30 percent were base coupes, 15 percent were Z51 convertibles and 14 percent were base convertibles.
When it came to options, the NPP performance exhaust was installed on 84 percent of the 2014 Corvettes, the UY4 navigation system was fitted to 82 percent and the CFA painted top capped 52 percent.
Torch Red was the most popular exterior color choice, accounting for 19 percent of the 2014 models built, followed by Arctic White (17 percent), Black (16 percent), Cyber Gray (11 percent), Laguna Blue (9 percent), Crystal Red Metallic (8 percent), Velocity Yellow and Blade Silver (6 percent each), Night Race Blue (5 percent) and Lime Rock Green (4 percent).
Jet Black Leather made up 39 percent of the interior selections, outpacing Adrenaline Red (21 percent), Kalahari (14 percent), Jet Black Suede (8 percent), Gray Leather (8 percent), Brownstone (4 percent), Kalahari Suede (3 percent), Gray Suede (2 percent) and Brownstone Suede (1 percent).
Edmunds says: Production of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette nearly tripling last year's output certainly speaks well for GM's iconic sports car.
