2014-'15 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Recalled for Fire Risk

WASHINGTON Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 1,497 2014-'15 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution sedans because a potential fuel leak increases the risk of a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall also includes the 2014-'15 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart.

"The affected turbocharged vehicles have a right parking brake cable that may contact the fuel tank, wearing away the tank's protective coating," said NHTSA in its recall summary. "Without the protective coating, the fuel tank may rust and leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

There are no injuries, crashes, fires or fatalities linked to the recall, Mitsubishi spokesman Alex Fedorak told Edmunds.

The affected Lancer Evolution vehicles were built from January 31, 2014 to September 5, 2014. The affected Lancer Ralliart vehicles were built from February 3, 2014 to September 5, 2014.

Mitsubishi dealers will replace the right parking brake cable and inspect the fuel tank.

If the fuel tank's exterior coating shows signs of damage from abrasive contact with the right parking brake cable, the fuel tank also will be replaced.

A date has not been set for the recall. Owners can contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820.

Edmunds says: Owners of these vehicles should wait for their official recall notice and then schedule a service appointment with their dealer. Those with an immediate concern should contact their dealer now.
