WASHINGTON — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it is reviewing a 2011 decision by Chrysler to limit its extended warranty coverage for rear glass separation in an estimated 15,000 2005 Chrysler Crossfire convertibles.
The covered repairs were limited to vehicles that were originally shipped to Chrysler dealers in warm-weather states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. The warranty does not cover vehicles outside of these states.
An unnamed consumer asked NHTSA to conduct a formal probe into the matter.
"Owners of the vehicles in the covered states were provided an extended warranty of 10 years or 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first," said NHTSA. "The petitioner's vehicle experienced a separation of the rear glass; however, it is not covered by the extended warranty."
NHTSA said it has received 158 complaints from consumers in this case.
It said "the back glass window of the convertible top separates from its adhesive bond attachment to the convertible top material."
"Chrysler should cover this top in any case where it occurs, not just in the few southern states they have deemed applicable for coverage," wrote one unnamed consumer in a complaint posted on the NHTSA Web site. "I am in (Virginia) and that's where the car was originally delivered. Anybody who says VA doesn't have high heat and humidity is crazy. We are just 75 miles from (North Carolina), a covered state. Chrysler should be forced to recall all of these tops."
NHTSA said the request will be evaluated for a grant or deny decision.
FCA US spokesman Eric Mayne told Edmunds there are no injuries or accidents linked to the review.
"We are fully cooperating with NHTSA's investigation, as is our longstanding practice," Mayne wrote.
Edmunds says: Owners of these cars will have to wait for a decision from NHTSA in this matter.
