DETROIT — GM's 4G LTE data connection through OnStar will start at $5 a month after a three-month or three gigabytes trial service, the automaker said on Monday.

GM is also offering one-time purchases of $5 a day for subscribers and $10 a day for non-subscribers for 250 MB of use.

The service will give users a fast mobile hot spot that will provide a high-speed Internet connection for up to seven wireless devices, as well as improved access to existing OnStar safety and security features. Pairable devices include laptop computers, smartphones, video-game consoles and tablets.

GM said the hotspot is on any time the car is on.

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu will be the first 4G LTE-equipped GM vehicle, followed by more than 30 other Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles by the end of the year.

The long list of 2015 GM vehicles with available OnStar 4G LTE includes the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Chevrolet Volt, Chevrolet Silverado, Buick Encore, Buick LaCrosse, GMC Terrain, GMC Canyon, Cadillac ATS, Cadillac ELR and Cadillac Escalade.

GM is shaping up as an industry leader when it comes to offering an embedded 4G service across much of its lineup. The 2015 Audi A3 also features 4G LTE connectivity.

Edmunds says: Consumers should be pleased with the relatively affordable pricing for OnStar 4G LTE.
