2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk First Look

The Most Powerful Jeep Ever Made

There's no good reason for the existence of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. Yet, it's nice to know that Jeep is willing to build it anyway. The Grand Cherokee is one of the last SUVs that still has true off-road ability, but that's not what the Trackhawk is about. In fact, it's the exact opposite. This Grand Cherokee is all about going fast on the street, or the track, hence the name.

To achieve that goal, the engineers at Jeep started out by borrowing the 707-horsepower V8 first introduced in Dodge's Hellcat cars. It fits nicely in the Jeep and allows it to go from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, according to Jeep. A fortified eight-speed automatic handles the shifts, and an adjustable all-wheel-drive system makes sure the power is sent to the wheels best suited to deliver maximum performance. It doesn't have low-range gears like most Jeeps, but the system does have multiple drive modes that allow it to deal with mud and snow.

This is more than just a Jeep with a more powerful engine. The Trackhawk has been upgraded across the board to assure that it's capable of delivering balanced performance. A set of adjustable Bilstein dampers allows for maximum flexibility on the street while huge Brembo brakes give this Jeep more stopping power than most sports cars. A unique set of 20-inch wheels and tires comes standard as well, so there's plenty of grip provided you're not planning on tackling any rocky trials.

One element of this Jeep that you might not expect is the fact that it can still tow up to 7,200 pounds. So even though it's a Jeep that's designed for all-out performance, it's still a functional SUV. The same goes for the interior, as it has been extensively upgraded yet still offers plenty of passenger and cargo room.

The only bad part of this Jeep will be how much it costs. No official numbers have been announced, but it's likely to top $70K when it goes on sale later this year.
