2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet Teased; Bound for Dealerships Mid-2016

ATLANTA — The highly anticipated 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet convertible is headed to Mercedes-Benz dealerships in mid-2016, following a formal unveiling at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show.

In conjunction with last weekend's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the S-Class Cabriolet was teased in a photo released by the automaker. It is based on the S-Class Coupe.

Few details were released.

"The new S-Class Cabriolet represents the sixth model of the S-Class family and is the first luxury four-seater cabriolet since 1971," Mercedes-Benz said in a statement.

The teaser photo shows that the cabriolet version of the S-Class appears to keep the same proportions as the hardtop version.

It will be offered as a 4Matic S550 and AMG S63, along with a rear-wheel-drive S65, Edmunds has confirmed.

Pricing and technical specifications have not been announced.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe starts at $121,550, including a $925 destination charge.

The drop-top version is expected to start above that price.

Key competitors to the upcoming S-Class Cabriolet include the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante and Bentley Continental GT Speed convertibles.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers in the ultra-luxury convertible segment get their first official look at the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet and can make plans for next year accordingly.
