AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat features Chrysler’s first use of a new 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine rated at more than 600 horsepower.
The Challenger SRT Hellcat arrives at dealerships later this year.
“The new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the ultimate performance muscle car,” said Tim Kuniskis, president and CEO of Dodge Brand, in a statement on Tuesday.
The 6.2-liter Hemi engine is the most powerful V8 engine Chrysler Group has ever produced.
Pricing on the 2015 Challenger SRT models will be announced later this summer, Chrysler Spokesman Dan Reid told Edmunds. A final calibration number on the new engine is expected later.
The Challenger SRT Hellcat will butt heads with the 2015 Ford Mustang GT500 and the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The upgraded Challenger SRT lineup is expected to give a boost to Chrysler’s SRT brand, which was folded back into Dodge, according to the automaker’s five-year business plan that was revealed on May 6.
The 2015 Challenger SRT will be offered in two trim levels, including the Hellcat. The standard model will be equipped with the 392 HEMI V8 engine that delivers 485 hp, an increase of 15 hp over the previous model.
Both models will be offered with either an upgraded six-speed manual transmission or the new eight-speed automatic transmission.
In an interesting twist, the Challenger SRT Hellcat will come with two key fobs. The black key fob automatically limits the engine’s output, while a red key fob unlocks full horsepower. A Valet Mode, which is offered on Challenger SRT and Challenger SRT Hellcat, limits engine output to 4,000 rpm and disables launch control.
The 2015 Challenger SRT also features new electronic drive modes. The drive modes include Custom, Sport, Track and Default and control horsepower, shift speeds, steering, traction and suspension. The Drive Mode feature is controlled through the Uconnect system.
The 2015 Challenger lineup gets a freshening that includes major interior upgrades, including redesigned seats.
Competitors to the Challenger include the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro, 2015 Ford Mustang and 2015 Nissan 370Z.
Edmunds says: The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat wants to give rivals like the 662-hp 2014 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 a run for the money.
