2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt First Look

Looks, Performance and Limited Edition

Make no mistake, the current Ford Mustang is a thoroughly modern sporting vehicle in every way. But because the venerated pony car enjoys such a rich heritage, we don't blame Ford for again dipping into the nostalgia pool and creating the 2019 Mustang Bullitt. Especially when it looks this good.

The 2019 Mustang Bullitt arrives just in time to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1968 movie Bullitt, a film with one of the most iconic car chases in cinema history. Co-starring Steve McQueen and a Highland Green 1968 Mustang, Bullitt was a smash hit. Strangely, Ford waited until 2001 to turn out the first tribute to the film, the aptly named Mustang Bullitt. It was available in a similar hue of green and had a smattering of performance and cosmetic upgrades. Above all, though, it looked badass. It was such a success that Ford reprised the limited-production nameplate in 2008.

Its de rigueur green paint and dark wheels with a polished lip are unmistakable, but the 2019 Mustang Bullitt's performance cred hasn't been ignored. The 5.0-liter V8 is said to deliver "at least" 475 hp — some 15 hp more than the current Mustang GT — and 420 lb-ft of torque. Engine upgrades include an open-element intake and an intake manifold lifted from the Shelby GT350.

The cabin has a cue-ball shift knob, green accent stitching, a standard 12-inch LCD instrument cluster and a heated steering wheel. MagneRide variable dampers are optional, as are leather Recaro seats.

Other Bullitt-specific touches include things you don't get — the spoiler, fender badge and grille badge are removed. Chrome trim around the side windows and grille is added and, of course, there's a Bullitt-specific crosshair badge on its rump.

You can get it in Dark Highland Green or black, but it'd be a shame to forgo the lovely green hue. And act quickly — the 2019 Mustang Bullitt is in limited production. They go on sale this summer.
