HOBBS, New Mexico — A good game of chess was enough to convince Tate Branch Dodge Chrysler Jeep to sponsor a local school starting its first chess club.
"A Heizer Middle School (substitute) teacher came by all excited about how much his students enjoy the game and how they prefer chess over video games, even coming in before school starts to play," General Manager Denny Hoy told Edmunds. "I knew it was something we should support."
The money the dealership donated helped the teacher to buy 55 chess boards, which he distributed throughout the school district.
"This wasn't meant to help us with car sales, but it's something we wanted to do to help our community out," Hoy said.
It's the same reason he sponsors the Lovington Wildcats cheerleaders.
"It is true that someday these students will want to buy a car, but this is really about owner Tate Branch, who is from a giving family and he believes in helping everyone, whether it's a cheerleader or a chess player," Hoy said.
Edmunds says: Taking its cues from the best chess players, this dealership makes the right move when it comes to community support.
