AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — A full redesign of Chrysler's Ram 1500 pickup truck is tentatively slated for calendar year 2019, according to U.S. supplier sources, who expect the next-generation truck to debut as a 2020 model.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, in a presentation this week to analysts at its U.S. headquarters, said it plans to expand the number of products offered by its Ram truck brand, but offered few details.

The analyst presentation noted a "minor update" to the Ram 1500 coming in calendar year 2015, followed by a "major update" — but not a full redesign — in calendar year 2017. Similar revisions are planned for the heavy-duty Ram 2500/3500 pickup truck in calendar years 2016 and 2018, respectively, the company said.

Focused primarily on the North American market, the Ram brand — formerly Dodge trucks — is growing, thanks to the continued strength of full-size pickups.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles wants to boost Ram sales by a third, from 463,000 in 2013 to 620,000 in 2018. Part of the growth will come in vans, where Ram now offers the ProMaster commercial range, based on Fiat's European vans.

The Ram 1500 competes with the Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado and Nissan Titan.

Edmunds says: Chrysler wants to keep its popular Ram pickups fresh.
