SANTA MONICA, California — Unexpected and out-of-production models, including the Dodge Magnum, Chrysler Pacifica and Pontiac Aztek, are winners with young used-car buyers, a new Edmunds.com analysis found.
The Magnum, dubbed America's station wagon Version 2.0 by Edmunds' editors, has a higher rate of Millennial buyers than any other vehicle on the used-car market.
According to the findings, 28 percent of all used Magnums sold in the U.S. were bought by shoppers ages 18-34 in the first six months of 2015.
The Pacifica, one of the original large crossover wagons, is next on the list, with 27.3 percent of all used sales this year registered to Millennials.
Other out-of-production favorites include the Pontiac Aztek, a discontinued midsize crossover that gained renewed popularity after being featured on the AMC Series Breaking Bad, and the Saturn Outlook, a crossover that can accommodate adults in all three rows.
Edmunds found that six of the 10 used models with the highest rates of Millennial buyers are no longer produced.
"Millennials are more practical used-car shoppers than we might otherwise credit them," said Edmunds.com Analyst Jeremy Acevedo. "They may not go into the shopping process targeting these lesser-known vehicles, but when they see how their price tags stack up against other, better-known vehicles, they suddenly become a lot more attractive.
"When it comes to used cars, value and utility appear to trump just about anything else for many Millennial buyers."
Edmunds says: While these used cars may seem eclectic or quirky to others, young buyers see them as unique vehicles with great value.
