WASHINGTON The 2014 Kia Forte sedan and hatchback earned a four-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2014 Forte received three stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test.

Five stars is the highest rating.

The 2014 Kia Forte Koup has not been rated. Neither has the 2015 Kia Forte.

The 2014 Forte received "good" ratings in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, but earned a "poor" rating in the small overlap front crash test. The test is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole.

Standard safety equipment on the 2014 Forte includes six airbags, antilock brakes and electronic stability control.

Key competitors to the Forte include the 2014 Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Mazda 3 and Toyota Corolla.

Edmunds says: For car shoppers keeping score in the safety category, the 2014 Honda Civic sedan, Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3 and Ford Focus all earned five-star overall safety ratings.
