Future Infiniti Sedans to Get Coupelike Appearance

At this week's 2018 Detroit Auto Show, Infiniti unveils its Q Inspiration Concept, a design study likely to foreshadow the next-generation Infiniti Q70 midsize sedan. While it's easy to admire the Q concept for its strikingly simple aesthetic alone, the real takeaway is its use of Infiniti's new four-cylinder variable compression engine. The VC-Turbo was initially shown last fall in the Infiniti QX50 SUV, but this is the first indication of how it might affect design and packaging in a car.

With the availability of the new powerful yet more compact four-cylinder engine, designers were able to make the car's hood shorter while simultaneously increasing cabin space. The result is a car with a more coupelike silhouette but with the overall length of a midsize sedan and big-sedan passenger comfort. The driveshaft sits below a flat floor to provide additional cabin space.

The Q concept also benefits from a more efficient engine than the larger V6 powerplants of competitors. Infiniti says its new turbocharged gasoline engine offers torque and efficiency comparable to that of a hybrid or diesel engine.

A high compression ratio gives greater efficiency, while a low compression ratio allows for greater power and torque. The VC-Turbo offers any compression ratio between 8:1 for high performance and 14:1 for high efficiency.

The Q Inspiration Concept's minimalist cockpit has some features that are unlikely to translate to production in the near future. These include a floating center console with a touchscreen for each passenger, each outfitted with a Meditation-Regeneration mode. Infiniti says this selection minimizes the level of information displayed and "offers guided meditation to help occupants leave any stress behind when they start a journey." The car can also monitor passenger biometrics. When in a nonmeditative mood, passengers can use the individual screens to watch movies or news or to stream music.

Finally, the Q Inspiration Concept features ProPilot, Infiniti's suite of near-future autonomous support technologies. Infiniti is positioning it as a "co-pilot," there to help drivers identify potential situations and road hazards. The ProPilot also has the ability to navigate stop-and-go highway traffic and monitor intersections, but it otherwise leaves the driver in command of the driving experience.
