DEARBORN, Michigan — Fuel-saving auto stop-start technology will be available on 70 percent of Ford's North American vehicle lineup by 2017, the automaker said on Thursday.

auto stop-start is an option on the 2014 Ford Fusion with the 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine.
Ford calls auto stop-start an "affordable technology" that can increase fuel efficiency by as much as 10 percent in city driving.

The feature turns off the engine when a vehicle stops, saving fuel. The engine restarts when the driver releases the brake pedal.

Ford said it is also researching dynamic cruise control, something it calls "a breakthrough technology that predicts road conditions to optimize fuel economy."

Dynamic cruise control can change the driver-selected set speed in response to current road conditions. It is also able to predict road conditions. Ford said the feature could improve fuel efficiency up to 10 percent, depending on the route.

"Think of this as cruise control technology that thinks," said Dimitar Filev, senior technical leader of Ford research and development, in a statement. "While this is a research-based technology now, its objective is to think fuel economy first."

Edmunds says: Ford continues to push the envelope when it comes to better fuel economy.
