ARLINGTON, Virginia — The refreshed 2016 Audi A6 sedan earned the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, following modifications to improve small overlap crash protection.
The test replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collies with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or a utility pole.
The "good" small overlap rating applies to A6s built after January.
"In the small overlap test, the driver's space was maintained well, with maximum intrusion of four inches at the foot rest," said the Institute in a statement on Tuesday. "Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity."
Vehicles that earn a "good" or "acceptable" rating for small overlap protection and "good" ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests quality for Top Safety Pick. To qualify for Top Safety Pick+, vehicles must also have an optional front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating.
Standard safety equipment on the 2016 A6 includes six airbags, antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, a pre-collision safety system and a post-collision safety system.
The 2016 A6 is on sale now at Audi dealerships.
Edmunds says: The Audi A6 comes through with flying colors in two key safety measures, something that car shoppers in this segment will want to note.
