ARLINGTON, Virginia — The 2014 Maserati Ghibli has been named a 2013 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The Ghibli earned the highest "good" ratings in the institute's tests, including the moderate overlap front, side and roof strength crash tests.

The Ghibli has not yet been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The highly anticipated luxury car is now in U.S. showrooms at a starting price of $67,100, including a $1,500 destination charge.

The Ghibli features a 404-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine, an eight-speed transmission and seven airbags.

IIHS Top Safety Pick testing simulates a side impact with a large SUV or pickup truck, front moderate overlap impact, roof-crush consistent with a rollover, and a rear collision capable of inducing whiplash.

Edmunds says: Kudos to Maserati for achieving this critical safety milestone with the Ghibli.
