New Ownership Subscription Plan Created for Upcoming 2019 Volvo XC40

A new Volvo subscription service makes getting into a 2019 Volvo XC40 "as hassle-free as having a mobile phone," according to the automaker.

Volvo has devised the modified lease plan, called Care by Volvo, for its first compact SUV, which is scheduled to begin arriving in U.S. dealerships next year. The service features no down payment, a non-negotiable flat-rate monthly fee and the ability to swap for a new car in as little as one year, with vehicle maintenance and insurance included.

"This is simple and clear; everything but fuel is basically included in one flat rate," said Lex Kerssemakers, president and CEO of Volvo Car USA, in a statement. "This is the next step toward making life less complicated for customers."

Not only is the program designed to be a more straightforward approach to having a car, it should also appeal to technology-oriented drivers who want to upgrade often to get the latest tech features in their vehicles. All 2019 Volvo XC40s come with a 12.3-inch instrument panel display, a 9-inch touchscreen for controlling infotainment and other functions, wireless device charging and a variety of other semiautonomous features.

"With Care by Volvo, we introduce a new car access for the modern age," said Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo's president and CEO. "In a time where consumers are used to transparent flat fees for all sorts of services, the traditional process of buying and owning a car can be perceived rather complicated. Care by Volvo changes all of that."

Volvo stresses that the XC40 can still be acquired through purchase and lease plans, for consumers who prefer doing business the traditional way. The company also notes that other makes and models will eventually be included in Care by Volvo. Full details and pricing of the program will be announced at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

As previously reported by Edmunds, earlier this year Cadillac announced a similar subscription service called Book.

With this plan, subscribers pay a flat fee of $1,500 per month to get access to a fleet of current-year Cadillac vehicles that they can swap out multiple times per year. The fleet includes everything from the high-powered ATS-V performance coupe to the full-size Escalade luxury SUV, any of which members will be able to order through a dedicated app and have it delivered to a specified addresses. Insurance, maintenance and detailing are all included in the monthly fee.
