2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Headed to Dealerships

IRVINE, California — The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata convertible is on its way to U.S. Mazda dealerships, Mazda announced on Tuesday.

Photos of the first shipment of MX-5 Miatas show carefully wrapped cars being unloaded from a freighter in California.

"They will begin their port processing procedures and deliveries will follow in the next several weeks," the automaker said in a statement.

Mazda's U.S. dealers have been awaiting the arrival of the affordable sports car, a fourth-generation model that brings the car into the new millennium in terms of technology and design.

Key exterior design cues include a low hood, blacked-out A-pillars and mirrors and exterior LED lights. The MX-5 Miata is wider, lower and lighter than the outgoing car.

The new Miata gets significantly improved fuel economy versus the 2015 Miata due to a weight reduction of approximately 150 pounds.

Key competitors to the MX-5 Miata include the Mini Cooper Convertible and Porsche Boxster.

Edmunds says: It's time to begin the conversation with your Mazda dealer if you're anxious to get your hands on the new MX-5 Miata.
