With the Bentayga, Bentley was at the vanguard of the ultra-luxe SUV. With its massive power, bespoke craftsmanship and staggering price tag (even before you started adding options such as the six-figure dash clock), who cared if the back seat was kind of cramped? The Bentayga stood out from the crowd. But then every Tom, Dick and Lamborghini got in on the act, and the Bentayga stopped seeming so special.
2020 Bentley Bentayga Speed First Look
1 Kilometer Per Hour Makes All the Difference
For 2020, Bentley is looking to retake some ground with the 2020 Bentley Bentayga Speed. As the name suggests, this new version is more powerful, faster and dressed up in sportier duds. It even, technically, has some bragging rights over the Lamborghini Urus.
Not content with the Bentayga's 600 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque, Bentley went to work on its W12 engine and bumped the output to 626 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. The Speed's 0-60 mph time is down to a claimed 3.9 seconds from the regular model's 4.1.
But these stunning gains aren't where the Speed is hanging its hat. No, the Bentayga Speed's real claim to fame is its top speed of 190 mph. That number gets more impressive in metric form, and not just because it's bigger. On the continent, the Speed's top speed is 306 km/h, besting the Lamborghini Urus' 305 km/h maximum and giving the Bentayga Speed the right to wear the crown of "world's fastest production SUV." At least until the Volkswagen Group — which controls both companies — decides to put the Urus back in front.
To help drag the big Bentley back down to legal speeds, massive carbon-ceramic brakes are available as an optional upgrade. Bentley has also fiddled with the exhaust, suspension and transmission tuning to improve the Bentayga's sporting feel.
Speed Speed Speed
Both the Bentayga Speed's interior and exterior have been updated to mirror the vehicle's new claim to fame, with aggressive dark-tinted accents, new 22-inch wheels and a tailgate spoiler. Inside, you'll find Bentley's first-ever Alcantara-trimmed upholstery, along with other visual cues such as carbon-fiber trim on the dash.
To ensure there is no confusion about which Bentayga this is, the word "Speed" has been applied in chrome behind both front wheels, stitched into all four seatbacks, and etched onto the door sills. Still, the Bentayga Speed is as subtle as a polar bear in a snowstorm compared to the erstwhile top-speed king, the Urus. So you can brag, but you won't necessarily have to.
Pricing and Release Date
The Bentayga Speed is set to go on sale later this year. No official pricing has been announced, but expect the Speed to come with a premium over the regular Bentayga's $200,000 cost of entry. As with all Bentleys, the maximum price is primarily limited by your imagination.
