BMW Bets on Big Luxury With the Concept X7 iPerformance

The BMW Concept X7 iPerformance is a full-size, three-row luxury SUV that serves as a sneak peek of the production version that arrives next year.

It's hard to ignore the massive grille that, even by BMW standards, seems overbearing. The faceted and beveled oversize twin-kidney signature grille doesn't just stand out; it's desperately begging and screaming for attention. Combined with the squared-off overall shape, the X7 concept has a substantial, if not heavy, presence. The back end is far less polarizing, with elements similar to those on current BMW vehicles.

Inside, there are three rows of seats underneath an expansive panoramic sunroof. The front and middle seats are similar in appearance and construction, resting on a narrow pedestal to accommodate the feet of passengers behind them. The upholstery features a new interpretation of diamond quilting and the seats themselves will likely come with a multitude of adjustments and climate control. Second-row passengers will also be treated to two massive entertainment touchscreens to help pass the time.

The cockpit is appropriately modern, utilizing a virtual instrument panel and a wide infotainment screen mounted atop the center of the dash. Physical buttons have been pared down to mostly essential functions, leaving the cabin with an uncluttered and sleek look. Other functions will likely be controlled through a new iteration of BMW's iDrive infotainment system that has an updated appearance as well.

Powering the X7 concept is a plug-in hybrid unit with a turbocharged gasoline engine at its heart. There aren't any specific details about power output or electric-only range, but we expect them closer to the production date. BMW notes that the production model will be unveiled sometime in 2018. We'll see if that grille survives in the interim.
