TORRANCE, California — The new 2017 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium will begin arriving at Toyota dealerships later this year, making a total of six versions of the 4Runner available to SUV shoppers.
Toyota notes that pricing for all 2017 4Runner models — the two new ones, plus the SR5, SR5 Premium, Limited and TRD Pro — will be announced closer to launch.
True to their name, both new Off-Road models come standard with Toyota's Multi-Terrain Select system, which allows the driver to use a dial to select a mode that adjusts wheel slip to best match existing conditions.
Further off-road cred is established with features like high ground clearance, an electronic-locking rear differential and the Crawl Control (CRAWL) system, which helps maintain a constant speed when driving over obstacles or in other challenging terrain.
The exterior of the 2017 4Runner TRD Off-Road gets some visual appeal from goodies like special black-painted wheels and unique badging, while the cabin is enhanced with logo-emblazoned floor mats and a center console with the appearance of carbon fiber.
Additional features on the TRD Off-Road Premium model include red TRD lettering on the headrests.
"The 4Runner has a large and loyal following, with dependability being a key factor. Of all the 4Runners purchased in the last ten years, 90 percent are still on the road," said John Myers, national manager of trucks and SUVs for Toyota Vehicle Marketing and Communications, in a statement. "4Runner owners often take their SUVs off the beaten path, so these new TRD Off-Road grades will be a popular recognition of TRD's history in the off-road arena."
Edmunds says: Shoppers in the market for a rugged SUV to take them off the beaten path will want to check out the new 2017 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road models.
