Feds Crash 2016 Nissan Maxima, Award Five-Star Rating

WASHINGTON — The redesigned 2016 Nissan Maxima full-size sedan earned the highest five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On sale now at Nissan dealerships, the 2016 Maxima received five stars in the front, side and rollover crash tests.

Standard safety features include six airbags, antilock brakes, brake assist, vehicle dynamic control and traction control.

The Maxima offers a new Driver Attention Alert system that can sense drowsiness and prompt the driver to take action to prevent an accident. It is standard on the Maxima Platinum model. Forward-collision alert, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert systems are standard on Maxima SL, SR and Platinum models.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not rated the 2016 Maxima.

Key Maxima rivals include the Chevrolet Impala, Hyundai Azera and Toyota Avalon.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers keeping score should note that the 2016 Chevrolet Impala also earned the highest five-star safety rating from NHTSA. The 2016 Hyundai Azera and Toyota Avalon have not been rated.
