DETROIT — The 2014 Cadillac ELR hybrid coupe began shipping to dealerships on Tuesday, General Motors announced.

The highly anticipated Cadillac ELR goes on sale in January in all major metropolitan locations.

Buyers will get their own concierge to assist with everything from charging tips to service appointments and vehicle updates.

Like the Chevrolet Volt, the Cadillac ELR is a range-extended hybrid that uses a gasoline engine that acts as a generator to provide additional range once the batteries have exhausted their initial charge.  Cadillac estimates that the ELR's batteries are good for about 35 miles of driving, while the range-extending engine could boost that distance to over 300 miles on a tank of gas.

The Cadillac ELR is built at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant, which also builds the 2014 Chevrolet Impala, Malibu and Volt, along with the Opel Ampera.

Edmunds says: The 2014 Cadillac ELR will be in car shoppers’ hands before too long.
