POPLAR BLUFF, Missouri — When Mother Nature dumped 12 inches of snow last week on southeast Missouri, the sales staff at Larry Hillis Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram joked they should host a snowman-building contest.
The marketing department was listening.
Employees promptly put together a contest asking for people to post a photo of their snowman to the dealership's Facebook page. The person whose photo got the most likes won a summer fun basket that included a hotel stay for two in one of three locations — winner's choice — in Florida.
The Monaghan family of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, built a "Spillway snowman" on top of their truck bed and it earned 426 likes, making them the winner over everything from a snow firefighter to a bride and groom.
The idea for the Facebook contest was to help raise awareness about the dealership.
Limpert said it was a success, based on the number of Facebook likes it got. Before the contest, it had hoped to get about 200 likes to hit the 4,000-point on its page. The dealership surpassed that and received about 500 likes.
"We think this snowman contest will help sell cars because now we have a lot more people reading our Facebook feed," Limpert said.
Edmunds says: A dealership with a playful spirit and a sense of humor about bad weather can't help but win friends and admirers.
