2016 Volkswagen Golf R Recalled for Incorrect Weight Label

WASHINGTON — Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 11 2016 Volkswagen Golf R hatchbacks because of an incorrect rear-axle weight label, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The listed weight limit is low enough that the vehicle owner may ignore the weight limits and overload the vehicle, exceeding the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, increasing the risk of a crash," NHTSA said in its recall summary.

The rear axle weight limit is incorrectly listed as 1,234 pounds, while the correct value should read 2,227 pounds, VW told federal safety regulators.

NHTSA said the customer may ignore the low value.

A Volkswagen spokesman did not respond immediately to a query from Edmunds asking if there are any injuries or crashes linked to the recall.

Volkswagen dealers will install a corrected certification label. The recall is expected to begin by the end of June. Owners can contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.

Edmunds says: Owners of these vehicles should stop into their VW dealer for a quick replacement of this label.
