Study Uncovers Top 10 Most Expensive Locations for Car Insurance Rates

FOSTER CITY, California Detroit has the dubious distinction of being the most expensive location for car insurance rates, according to a new study that breaks down insurance cost by ZIP code.

Brooklyn, New York took 2nd place on the most expensive list, followed by Philadelphia.

CarInsurance.com studied rates for a 2014 Honda Accord with full coverage in 33,410 ZIP codes in the U.S. The analysis showed a national average rate of $1,231 for a Honda Accord.

"Several locations, including Palo Alto, California and Denver fall at the average," said Michelle Megna, managing editor of CarInsurance.com.

Green Springs, Ohio leads the list for locations with the least expensive car insurance rates, followed by Arden, North Carolina. Saco, Maine took 3rd place on that list.

"Many factors go into calculating car insurance rates, but a driver's location is typically used to kick off the process," the study noted. "ZIP codes are judged to have different risk levels based on the number and severity of car insurance claims within the area."

CarInsurance.com tells consumers that every car insurance company has its own base rate and does its own calculations.

The U.S. government advises consumers to get several quotes from insurance companies to get the best coverage at the best price.

Edmunds says: This study serves as a reminder that it's important to comparison shop to get the best car insurance rates.
