DEARBORN, Michigan — Sales of the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor have hit record highs in eight of the past 10 months, prompting the automaker to increase production.

Raptor sales are up 14 percent so far this year, according to the automaker.

Ford said it will increase Raptor production from three trucks per hour to five trucks per hour at the Dearborn Truck Plant.

The automaker noted that Raptor is one of the "fastest-turning vehicles in the automotive industry, with only a 15-day supply on dealer lots."

Ford does not break down sales figures for individual F-Series trims. But industry experts say sales of the Raptor average around 1,000 a month.

The Raptor is one of the most expensive models in the F-150 lineup. The 2013 Ford SVT Raptor starts at $45,030, including a $995 destination charge. Pricing has not been posted for the 2014 Raptor.

The 2014 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition is the latest model.

Ford said it intends to grow the market for "increasingly specialized full-sized pickup trucks."

Edmunds says: Consumers are not deterred by Raptor's big price tag. So Ford responds by ramping up production.
