SANTA MONICA, California — Consumers in the market for a new car, truck or SUV can warm up to some money-saving sales events being held this summer at many U.S. dealerships.
Smart buyers know there are good deals to be had year-round, but this time of year can provide especially good bargains as manufacturers and dealers try to clear space for incoming new models in the fall.
Jeremy Acevedo, supervisor of pricing and industry analysis for Edmunds.com, calls summertime "a ripe opportunity for shoppers in that it combines strong incentives with availability of vehicles. While it may be possible to find great deals at the end of the year, the types of deals and the variety of models will have diminished dramatically."
Edmunds data shows that discounts, which remain fairly steady from January through June, begin to rise in July as a result of increased motivation on the part of dealers.
In addition, according to the data, about 80 percent of vehicles sold in August are from the current model year, but by September that number is down to 66 percent, indicating that model choice dwindles considerably as summer winds to a close.
Seasonal promotions this year include the Acura It's That Kind of Summer Event, which offers 1.9 percent financing for up to 60 months on sedan models like the 2016 Acura ILX, 2015 TLX and 2016 RLX, as well 1.9 percent financing for up to 36 months on 2016 RDX and MDX SUVs.
Chevrolet is holding a Bonus Tag Sale, which gives buyers the choice of zero-percent financing or an additional $1,000 in purchase cash on select models, including the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze, Impala and Malibu sedans, 2015 Camaro, 2015 Silverado 1500 Double Cab 4WD pickup, 2015 Equinox and Traverse SUVs and the 2015 Volt plug-in hybrid.
Chrysler, Dodge and Ram shoppers can take advantage of those brands' Summer Clearance Events, featuring $1,000-$5,000 cash allowances on a variety of models, such as the 2015 Chrysler 200 sedan, Dodge Dart sedan, Ram 2500 pickup and Ram ProMaster City minivan.
The Ford Summer Sales Event offers zero-percent financing for 72 months on 2015 model cars like the Ford Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Taurus and C-Max Hybrid, as well as the Escape, Explorer and Expedition SUVs.
Lincoln is tempting buyers with its Summer Invitation Sales Event, which features zero-percent financing for up to 60 months on the 2015 Lincoln MKS and MKZ sedans, MKC and MKX crossovers and the Navigator SUV. Lincoln is also providing owner loyalty cash ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 on certain models.
Buyers choosing a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta or Passat sedan or Tiguan SUV during the Volkswagen Year End Sales Event will receive a $1,000 reward card that can be used anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. VW is also offering zero-percent financing on select models of the 2015 Jetta, Passat, CC, Beetle, Tiguan and Touareg.
With its Wonder of Summer Event, Volvo is waiving the first month's payment and providing five years of coverage that includes complimentary scheduled maintenance, wear and tear coverage, roadside assistance and a factory warranty on most models except the 2016 XC90 and Limited Edition S60 and V60 Polestar vehicles.
Many outstanding lease terms are available at this time of year, as well. Check the Edmunds.com $199 Lease Deals for July 2015 for more information.
Note that offers may vary by region, apply only to qualified customers and require buyers to select from vehicles currently in stock. Many advertised finance plans require a down payment, and most offers are only available for a limited time.
Edmunds says: It's summertime and the living is easy for consumers looking for bargains on a new car, truck or SUV.
