HERNDON, Virginia — The second-generation 2017 Audi R8 coupe and a retired astronaut seeking a "rocket-like ride" are the focus of Audi's 2016 Super Bowl commercial.
Dubbed "The Commander," the ad showcases the R8, which is described as "the most powerful Audi production model ever."
The R8 arrives at U.S. Audi dealerships in the spring, targeting the 2017 Acura NSX — also the focus of a Super Bowl commercial.
Other R8 competitors include the 2016 McLaren 570S, 2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S and the 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo.
Audi's Super Bowl commercial will air during the first quarter of the game.
The point of "The Commander" is that "amazing things happen when we shoot for the moon," Audi said.
Car shoppers will see a wide range of vehicles pitched during the Super Bowl. They include the 2016 Buick Cascada, 2017 Honda Ridgeline and 2017 Hyundai Elantra.
Edmunds says: Audi pushes the boundaries of Super Bowl advertising with a "moon shot" during the Big Game.
