2016 Toyota Prius Super Bowl Ad Touts Upgraded Performance

TORRANCE, California — Super Bowl commercials for the 2017 Acura NSX hybrid coupe and 2017 Audi R8 coupe won't be the only ones touting performance. The 2016 Toyota Prius Super Bowl ad takes an unexpected turn, with a wonky looking, chai-drinking guy boasting that the hybrid is "Heck on Wheels."

A teaser video of the Prius ad was released on Thursday.

Toyota said it would be focusing on the "unexpected features" of the redesigned Prius in its Super Bowl offensive.

"The teaser touts the hybrid leader's upgraded performance, fresh suite of safety technology features and sleek new styling," Toyota said in a statement.

In the past, much of the attention was focused on the stellar fuel economy of the Japanese hybrid, which delivers 54 mpg in city driving, according to the EPA.

The 2016 Prius is on sale now at Toyota dealerships.

Key competitors to the Prius include the Chevrolet Volt, Ford Fusion Hybrid and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

Auto advertising is poised to take center stage at the Big Game, with new commercials on tap for the 2017 Honda Ridgeline, 2017 Hyundai Elantra and 2016 Kia Optima, among others.

Edmunds says: The Prius is naughty and nice, at least according to this new ad campaign.
