AFFALTERBACH, Germany — Mercedes-Benz revealed its 2015 Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe, the successor to the automaker's long-standing CL65 AMG.
Set to arrive at U.S dealers in late 2014, the 2015 Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe is the latest vehicle to offer AMG's hand-built 6.0-liter biturbo V12 engine, now rated at 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.
Mercedes estimates the S65 AMG coupe runs from zero to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 186 mph.
AMG's Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic transmission offers three modes: Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M). An Eco stop-start fuel-saving function is standard but works in mode "C" only.
Mercedes AMG says its new sport suspension, Magic Body Control, combining Active Body Control (ABC), Road Surface Scan and a curve tilting function, "heightens motoring enjoyment and comfort. The object is not to reach higher cornering speeds, but to produce an even more pleasant motoring experience."
The curve tiling function, which made its U.S. debut in the 2015 S550 coupe, can be employed between speeds of 10 and 111 mph.
A new lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter and backup battery, reducing the new S65 AMG coupe's heft by 44 pounds. Mercedes has not yet released the new coupe's total curb weight.
At its corners, the S65 AMG coupe features forged wheels in a 16-spoke design, sized 20-by-8.5 inches at the front and 20-by-9.5 inches at the rear, wrapped with 255/40R20 and 285/35R20 rubber. Additional wheels are available as optional alternatives, including a matte black/highly polished combination.
The AMG high-performance compound brake system features brake calipers with a gray finish. Buyers can also opt for red calipers, or a ceramic high-performance compound brake system.
Inside the 2015 Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe's new cabin, drivers will notice a new three-spoke sports steering wheel, which sits above a 12.2-inch, high-resolution color instrument display cluster.
Standard equipment on the S65 AMG coupe includes an 8-by-2.75-inch head-up display and a touchpad that can be used to operate all of the coupe's infotainment functions. The handrest-mounted touchpad measures approximately 2.5-by-1.7 inches in size.
Additional standard features include a Burmester 3D surround-sound stereo system, keyless start and a host of safety equipment including a 360-degree camera, parking assist, blind-spot and cross-traffic assist.
Edmunds says: This new coupe is the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz technology and performance, so expect a price tag to match when it goes on sale later this year.
