Honda Crosstour Discontinued

TORRANCE, California — Honda said it will stop building the slow-selling Honda Crosstour hatchback after the 2015 model year. 

The move allows the automaker's East Liberty, Ohio, plant to focus on building the Honda CR-V and Acura RDX models. The plant will also expand light truck production in early 2017 with the Acura MDX.

Honda sold just 742 Crosstours in March, a drop of 27 percent compared to March 2014.

The Crosstour, essentially a tall wagon based on the Honda Accord, blends the elements of a crossover with the appearance and driving dynamics of a car.

"The Crosstour, introduced in 2010, served a positive role in helping the Honda brand target crossover buyers," said John Mendel, American Honda Motor Co. executive vice president, in a statement on Wednesday. "However, the crossover segment has evolved and we believe the all-new 2016 Honda HR-V launching later this spring will create new value for crossover shoppers and play a more significant role as a gateway model for the Honda brand to drive light truck sales growth."

The Crosstour is on sale now at Honda dealers.

Key rivals to the Crosstour include the Nissan Murano, Subaru Outback and Toyota Venza.
