Few vehicles have consistently dominated their segment time and time again like the Ford F-150 has. The success of Ford's light-duty pickup truck is partly due to the almost endless configurations it offers. Whether you're looking for an affordable work truck, luxury cruiser or capable off-roader, the F-150 has you covered. It offers a wide range of engines, from a base V6 to a powerful hybrid powertrain. There's even an all-electric F-150, the Lightning (which we review separately). You have a choice of several cab and bed sizes and an incredible number of features to choose from including the Pro Power Onboard system that can supply juice to various electronics. And for 2024, the F-150 looks to be even better thanks to the most significant update since this latest-generation truck debuted for the 2021 model year.
The most obvious changes are what Ford has done to the exterior. The grille is now a full-width design that, on lower trims, wraps all the way around the headlights in a callback to the F-series trucks of the 1970s. Higher trims also get new grille treatments. Inside, all F-150s now get a 12-inch digital gauge cluster as standard kit and there's no more small center screen — all models now have a 12-inch central touchscreen display as standard too. Other tech improvements encompass an update to Blue Cruise, Ford's hands-free driving assistance system, to make it more useful and helpful in highway traffic.
Under the hood, Ford has dropped the entry-level naturally-aspirated 3.3-liter V6. The turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 now serves as the base engine. The Raptor R's supercharged 5.2-liter V8 will also get a boost in power, per Ford, but it hasn't said by how much just yet. Power outputs for the remaining engine lineup are unchanged, though Ford says it's going to drop the price for the optional PowerBoost hybrid to make it the same as the optional turbocharged 3.5-liter V6.
Another addition is a new take on the tailgate. The optional Pro Access Tailgate features a 20/60/20 split, and the middle portion is hinged on the right side. It opens like a typical door in your house would to three set positions: 37 degrees, 70 degrees and 100 degrees. The idea is to make access to the bed of the truck easier in situations where a typical drop-down tailgate would be a hindrance. Another small but useful feature is the addition of a small storage box nestled in the side of the bed near the taillights.
The F-150's segment is highly competitive to say the least, and the Blue Oval is consistently updating its best-selling vehicle to stay on top. The changes made for 2024 will likely help keep the F-150 at the top of its game and ensure it stays at the top of our truck rankings. The F-150 was the Edmunds Top Rated Truck for 2022 and 2023. It scored well in all our categories and topped its rivals in most ways. But if you're still undecided on what truck to get, check out the Ram 1500. It's currently the F-150's most competitive rival and is the smoothest-riding pickup. The recently redesigned Toyota Tundra is also worth a look, and the F-150's longtime archenemy, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, has a lot to offer. Ford hasn't released complete information on the 2024 F-150 as of this writing. We'll update our recommendation if anything changes, but based on last year's F-150, the XLT trim is the way to go if you want to keep the price in check. Most of the features you get in the significantly more expensive Lariat trim can be added to the XLT, and both trims offer the same powertrains. If you want the BlueCruise hands-free highway driving system, though, you need to upgrade to the Lariat trim.
[Editor's note: The following unofficial information is based on last year's F-150 and updated with what we know so far about the 2024 F-150. We'll update this section once we have complete information.] The Ford F-150 is offered in seven primary trim levels: XL, STX, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Platinum Plus. There are also the off-road-oriented Tremor, Raptor and Raptor R models that exist outside the traditional lineup. There are three cab styles — regular, SuperCab (extended) and SuperCrew (crew cab) — and three bed lengths depending on cab style. Along with the many trim levels and cab styles, the F-150 offers six available powertrains. All are paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission with either rear- or four-wheel drive except the Limited, Tremor, Raptor and Raptor R, which are 4WD-only. Keep reading for our breakdown of the F-150's powertrains and each trim's significant standard and optional features.

Raptor R
Primarily swaps the Raptor's turbocharged V6 for a much more potent supercharged V8. It also comes standard with 37-inch tires that are otherwise an option on the regular Raptor.
As you'd probably expect of a full-size pickup, the F-150 is available with all sorts of options. Most lower trim levels can be fitted with options that come standard on higher trims. The most notable option is Ford's in-bed power system called Pro Power Onboard. It is available with three power ratings: 2 kW, 2.4 kW and 7.2 kW. The 7.2-kilowatt system is only available with the 3.5-liter hybrid powertrain. Pro Power allows you to charge and use devices from a system of household-style plugs in the bed of the truck, including power tools, tailgating accessories and even small appliances.
