Top 10 Most Fuel-Efficient SUVs and Crossovers for 2012

Fuel efficiency is a hot theme in the automotive industry, and the SUV/crossover segment certainly hasn't been left behind. SUVs have historically been synonymous with gas-guzzling excess, but these days, there are several models available for shoppers who want decent mileage along with SUV versatility. Some of the most fuel-efficient choices are hybrids, but there are also plenty of gas-only models that fare well at the pump.

These 10 models top all others in the area of fuel efficiency. We arrived at our rankings using the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) miles-per-gallon ratings for city and highway travel. We utilized the EPA's combined fuel economy formula: 55 percent of city mpg rating plus 45 percent of highway mpg rating. The rating for each vehicle below is expressed in mpg as a city/highway/combined ratio.
