The 2025 Ranger is Ford's midsize truck. It's smaller and less capable than the F-150, but there are still some very good reasons to consider buying one. Compared to its big sibling, it's easier to drive and less expensive. And with a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds, the Ranger can pull most of the trailers and boats that people actually use. Ford also redesigned the Ranger just last year, giving it an all-new design inside and out, loads of available tech, an available turbocharged V6 engine and a new Ranger Raptor version.

Edmunds spotlight: The Ranger Raptor

Like its full-size stablemate, the Ford Ranger has a Raptor version that's designed for off-road performance in the way a Mustang GT is designed for carving up canyon roads. The 2025 Ranger Raptor gets a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 making 405 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. Along with that comes standard four-wheel drive, Fox shocks, a two-speed transfer case, front and rear locking differentials, and 33-inch tires. Few trucks on the road give us thrills quite like Ford's Raptor models.

Competitors to consider

It's a great time to be shopping for a midsize truck — the whole segment is flush with new models. If you're on the fence about the Ranger, the newest Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon are both worth a look. The Jeep Gladiator is more dedicated to off-roading, and even the Nissan Frontier is vastly improved. Of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the Toyota Tacoma, which itself was recently redesigned and remains an excellent choice. How does the Ranger drive? The base four-cylinder engine is stout. At the Edmunds test track, our four-wheel-drive Ranger Lariat test truck accelerated from zero to 60 mph in a quick 6.7 seconds. A comparable Toyota Tacoma we tested needed a full second more to reach 60 mph. The Ranger is available with a V6, something you won't find in the Chevy Colorado or Tacoma. While it doesn't improve towing or payload capability, it does make the truck a hair quicker. We clocked the truck at 6.2 seconds to 60 mph.

The truck can be a little sluggish when you're driving at low speeds, but it dials up plenty of power for passing or merging. Around corners, the Ranger feels controlled (for a truck) and stable. The steering has just the right amount of heft and assist to it. It's an easy truck to keep straight on the highway as well as maneuver in parking lots.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Ranger? The Ranger is comfortable, even without the usual truck caveats. The ride is smooth and is noticeably better than the competition's. The front seats are comfortable and supportive on long drives, and if you opt for a Raptor, you'll get even more comfortable seats with more bolstering to keep you locked in off-road. If the Ranger falls short in one area, it's noise. The engine sounds coarse when you're going full throttle, but so do all of the other midsize trucks with turbocharged four-cylinders.

Interior

How’s the interior? There's plenty of room up front. The steering wheel offers plenty of adjustment range, as does the driver's seat, so it's easy to find a comfortable driving position. It offers better visibility than the competition too thanks to the Ranger's low hood. In back, the Ranger has less legroom than what you'll find in a Ridgeline or Gladiator, but it's good enough for kids or occasionally taking along adults.

All of the commonly used controls are placed within easy reach of the driver, as is the center touchscreen. A few of the on-screen climate controls can be distracting to use while driving, but we do find the screen's top row of quick access buttons (for things such as the available camera system) to be pretty useful.

How’s the tech? Connectivity features on the Ranger are excellent. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration systems connect wirelessly, and it's easy to switch between them and the native infotainment interface. This infotainment system also has some natural speech recognition, but not to the same level you'll get with Google Assistant in the Chevy Colorado.

Driver assist features are where the Ranger really excels compared to other midsize trucks. They work well and are unobtrusive in daily driving. The optional surround-view camera is also excellent. It offers a high-resolution picture in all directions, and when driving off-road, the forward-facing camera has lines displaying the path of the front tires so you can maneuver around or over obstacles with ease.

Towing and Storage

How are the towing and storage? The Ranger is only offered with a single cab-and-bed combination. Though it's a short bed, Ford has widened it so there is 4 feet of space between the wheelwells (enough to lay a sheet of plywood flat), and there's an impressive 1,805 pounds of maximum payload capacity available. There is also a new step integrated into the frame, and not the bumper, to allow easier access to the bed.

Maximum trailer capacity is 7,500 pounds (just behind the Colorado's 7,700 pounds), but the Ford leads when it comes to towing technology with its Pro Trailer Backup Assist system that allows the driver to reverse the truck with a trailer via a knob placed in the center console.

How’s the fuel economy? Both 2WD and 4WD versions of the Ranger with the four-cylinder engine get an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in combined driving, which is average for a midsize truck. During our time with the Ranger, we had no issues staying close to the EPA's estimates. A more powerful V6 will also be offered and gets a slightly worse 20 mpg combined.

Is the Ranger a good value? This is a case of getting what you pay for, though in the case of the Ranger it does mean you're paying a bit more than you would at each trim level than with the Chevrolet Colorado. The Ford does have better materials, and it's miles better than the Tacoma in terms of refinement. That makes it a good value for the quality you're getting, but the fact remains that it does add to the base cost of the truck at each step.

Wildcard

8.5/10

This is a truck without real weaknesses. It offers a compelling mix of quality, technology and driving prowess that eliminates many of the pain points associated with truck ownership. If you're looking at a Ranger that isn't a Raptor, its styling trends more toward boring than beefy, but we don't mind that in a time when trucks seem to be trying too hard to show brawn.

Which Ranger does Edmunds recommend?

We think the midrange XLT is the best value within the Ranger lineup. It's reasonably priced and comes with the features most truck buyers will need. You can also stick with the Ranger's base four-cylinder engine. We tested the Ranger's available V6 and didn't find that it made any appreciable gains in performance.

Ford Ranger models

The midsize 2025 Ford Ranger comes in a crew-cab configuration with a 5-foot bed. There are four trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat and Raptor. The standard powertrain is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder that produces 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. That's the only choice on the XL, while a more powerful turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 (315 hp, 400 lb-ft of torque) is available for the XLT and Lariat. The Raptor gets the most powerful engine of the bunch: a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that makes 405 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, along with a slew of off-road and interior upgrades that make it stand out from the rest of the lineup.

All trims are offered with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive except for the Raptor, which comes with 4WD standard. Keep reading for more details on the Ranger's standard features and options.

Overview

The Ford Ranger is a pickup truck icon, even if it stands in the shadow of its larger sibling, the venerable F-150. The Ranger was redesigned for 2024, with an all-new design inside and out, loads of available tech, and available turbocharged V6 engines that should enhance the Ranger's capabilities while providing a bit more pep in its step. The changes were welcome, as the previous generation Ranger was a lackluster offering from the get-go. Given the extensive changes for 2024, we don't expect Ford to make any significant changes to the 2025 Ranger.

Edmunds spotlight: Ranger Raptor

Ford introduced its Raptor off-road treatment with the 2010 F-150, offering a more powerful engine, beefy off-road tires, wider bodywork and a reworked suspension. The Ranger received the Raptor treatment starting in 2019, but that truck was never offered in America. That's changed with this fifth-generation model, and we couldn't be happier. In addition to a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 making 405 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, the Ranger Raptor gets standard four-wheel drive, Fox shocks, a two-speed transfer case, front and rear locking differentials, and 33-inch tires. Few trucks on the road give us thrills quite like Ford's Raptor models.

Competitors to consider

The midsize truck segment has roared back to life over the past few years, thanks in part to the Ranger's reintroduction to America after a few years on ice. But the fifth-gen Ranger has some of the toughest competition it's ever had to deal with. Some of Edmunds' favorites include the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon twins, the Nissan Frontier, the Jeep Gladiator and the Toyota Tacoma, the long-running king of the midsize pickup segment. The Colorado and Tacoma in particular are worth a look if you're in the market for a Ranger.
