Edmunds spotlight: The Ranger Raptor

Like its full-size stablemate, the Ford Ranger has a Raptor version that's designed for off-road performance in the way a Mustang GT is designed for carving up canyon roads. The 2025 Ranger Raptor gets a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 making 405 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. Along with that comes standard four-wheel drive, Fox shocks, a two-speed transfer case, front and rear locking differentials, and 33-inch tires. Few trucks on the road give us thrills quite like Ford's Raptor models.

Competitors to consider

It's a great time to be shopping for a midsize truck — the whole segment is flush with new models. If you're on the fence about the Ranger, the newest Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon are both worth a look. The Jeep Gladiator is more dedicated to off-roading, and even the Nissan Frontier is vastly improved. Driving experience

How does the Ford Ranger drive? The base four-cylinder engine is stout. At the Edmunds test track, our four-wheel-drive Ranger Lariat test truck accelerated from zero to 60 mph in a quick 6.7 seconds. A comparable Toyota Tacoma we tested needed a full second more to reach 60 mph. The Ranger is also available with a V6, something you won't find in the Chevy Colorado or Tacoma. While it doesn't improve towing or payload capability, it does make the truck a hair quicker. We clocked the truck at 6.2 seconds to 60 mph.

The truck can be a little sluggish when driving at low speeds, but it dials up plenty of power for passing or merging. The Ranger rides smoother over bumps than the Colorado and Tacoma by some margin, and its steering has just the right amount of heft and assist. Thanks to the Ranger's low hood and large windows, it offers better visibility than the competition too.

Driver assist features are where the Ranger really excels compared to other midsize trucks. The optional surround-view camera system is excellent, and when driving off-road, the forward-facing camera displays the path of the front tires so you can maneuver around or over obstacles with ease.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Ford Ranger? The Ranger's front seats are comfortable and supportive on long drives, and the back seats offer more legroom than the Toyota Tacoma's rear does. If the Ranger falls short in one area, it's noise. The engine sounds coarse when you're going full throttle, but in general the Ranger is pretty quiet.

The steering wheel offers plenty of adjustment range, as does the driver's seat, so it's easy to find a comfortable driving position. All of the commonly used controls are placed within easy reach of the driver, as is the center touchscreen. A few of the on-screen climate controls can be distracting to use while driving, but we do find the screen's top row of quick access buttons (for things such as the available camera system) pretty useful.

The climate control is a mix of digital and physical buttons, but we were impressed with how quickly it got the cabin to the desired temperature.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The Ranger's connectivity features are excellent. The Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration systems connect wirelessly, and it's easy to switch between them and the native infotainment interface. Ford offers a navigation system with real-time traffic updates, but its free trial ends after one year. This 12-inch infotainment system also has some natural speech recognition, but not to the same level as you'll get with Google Assistant in the Chevy Colorado.

The Ranger offers plenty of power points, be they USB ports or 12-volt sources for your devices. Should you like extra power from your stereo, the Ranger offers a 10-speaker B&O audio system.

How’s storage and cargo? For items you don't want to put in the bed of the Ranger, the back seat can be folded flat to create a decently sized storage area. There is some storage space under the back seat but it's on the smaller side. Front passengers don't have the same options for storing personal items that they'd have in a full-size truck. Even though the Ranger sports two gloveboxes, room for larger personal effects is very limited. Even the door pockets aren't terribly practical.

Is the Ford Ranger a good value? This is a case of getting what you pay for, though it does mean paying a bit more than you would for a Chevrolet Colorado. The Ford does have higher-quality interior materials, and it's miles better than the Tacoma in terms of refinement. That makes it a good value for the quality you're getting, but the fact remains that it does add to the base cost of the truck at each step. Depending on what you need from the Ranger, or what you don't, it pays to choose the trim level wisely.

The Ranger's warranties are fairly average, with three years/36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage and five years/60,000 miles for the powertrain. Ford provides roadside assistance for five years/60,000 miles.

How is the towing and hauling? The Ranger is only offered with a single cab-and-bed combination. Though it's a short bed, Ford has widened it so there is 4 feet of space between the wheelwells (enough to lay a sheet of plywood flat), and there's an impressive 1,788 pounds of maximum payload capacity available. There is also a new step integrated into the frame, and not the bumper, to allow easier access to the bed.

Maximum trailer capacity is 7,500 pounds, which is enough to pull small trailers with ease, and many midsize trailers as well. The Ranger also has some cool towing technology with its Pro Trailer Backup Assist system, which allows the driver to reverse the truck with a trailer via a knob placed in the center console.

How’s the fuel economy? Both 2WD and 4WD versions of the Ranger with the four-cylinder engine get an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in combined driving, which is average for a midsize truck. During our time with the Ranger, we had no issues staying close to the EPA's estimates. The optional V6 drops that to 20 mpg combined, which lines up with what we saw during our time testing the truck.
