2026 Volvo EX40

The 2026 Volvo EX40 is a compact all-electric SUV based on the gas-powered XC40 that dates back to 2019. It sits between the smaller EX30 and the larger and forthcoming EX60. After a name change (from the XC40 Recharge) and some notable battery and charging upgrades last year, the EX40 returns with a trimmed-down lineup. It should simplify ordering but also gives shoppers fewer choices. Most notably, the previous base Core trim has been discontinued, leaving the more expensive Plus model as the entry-level trim.

The 2026 Volvo EX40 remains a strong choice among newer EVs in its class, including the smaller EX30 and the related and pricier Polestar 3. The Genesis GV60 is priced competitively and offers similar range, but its plastic-heavy interior and unusual aesthetic tend to polarize opinions. The Cadillac Optiq beats them all in range and luxury. A new Mercedes-Benz electric GLB is also on the way and has the potential to shake things up.

While range, performance and style certainly play a significant role in attracting shoppers, the EX40 benefits from some lesser-known features that enhance versatility and convenience. The cargo area features a large bin underneath, while the floor panel can be propped up to serve as a divider. In this position, three hooks atop the hinge can be used to keep your shopping bags from tossing their contents. There's also a novel hook that flips out from the glovebox lid that will keep your to-go order from spilling. The center console, meanwhile, has a small removable trash bin. These features may seem trivial, but you might be surprised how helpful they are from day to day.
