Overview

The 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe can feel a bit like a dinosaur when compared to the endless supply of crossover SUVs flooding American streets. But as any 9-year-old can tell you, dinosaurs are awesome. The Tahoe received a refresh in 2025 and, in addition to an exterior refresh, got a power boost for its optional diesel engine. As such, we don't expect major changes to the 2026 Tahoe. Its massive size and strong towing power make it a great pick for large families looking to hit the open road.
Edmunds spotlight: A substantive refresh last year
Last year, Chevy gave the Tahoe a new nose and tail, a revised dash design and new features. The exterior tweaks are minor enough that you'll have to be a Tahoe enthusiast (do those exist?) to notice them. But the updated dashboard is apparent and gives the cabin a techy vibe. Chevy moved the previously dash-mounted push-button shifter to the column where it belongs. In doing so, it freed up space for a huge 17.7-inch touchscreen that's standard on every trim. The system is Google Android-based, and unlike its application in Chevy's electric vehicles, it features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The optional turbodiesel 3.0-liter six-cylinder now makes 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque, up from 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft, respectively. And it's now offered in the Z71 trim. A 360-degree camera system and adaptive cruise are now standard on every Tahoe.
Competitors to consider
The Tahoe's primary competition is the Ford Expedition, which is offered with a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 in standard and high-output versions. However, there's a distinct lack of hybrid or diesel power in the Expedition's lineup. Other considerations include the also-revised-for-2025 GMC Yukon — the Tahoe's mechanical twin — the redesigned Nissan Armada, and the hybrid-only Toyota Sequoia. Checking out any of the biggest three-row crossovers is also a good idea — they're cheaper, more efficient and have nearly as much passenger space.
What’s it like to live with?
We tested the current-generation Chevy Tahoe for 42,000 miles, so if you're looking for a more in-depth view of Chevy's full-size SUV, it's a great place for a deep dive. In short, we relished its space and suffered no major problems, but the 5.3-liter V8's fuel economy was poor even by full-size SUV standards.
Edmunds Expert Rating

Driving experience
Navigating city streets with the Tahoe is easy thanks to its tight turning circle and light steering. The 10-speed automatic transmission shifts promptly and unobtrusively. The Tahoe's independent rear suspension is new for this generation and cures many issues that plague older models. Our test vehicle was equipped with a fully adaptive suspension and easily soaked up bumps big and small.
Thanks to the Tahoe's massive windows, visibility isn't an issue. Our test vehicle, a loaded RST trim, sports a ton of cameras. You can see what's in front, behind, and along this SUV's sides. Even in this loaded trim, though, the driver aids are fairly basic. You get adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance and blind-spot monitoring. The tech you want, like Super Cruise, remains a pricey extra.
Comfort
The second row has a decent amount of space until you move the center console backward (it's power-operated by the driver). With it scooted, taller second-rowers can feel a bit crowded. Getting in and out is easy thanks to step rails and wide door openings. Our test vehicle's second-row captain's chairs made accessing the third row easier than expected.
The effectiveness of Tahoe's multi-zone climate control system does not disappoint; heating and cooling are effective for all three rows. As on the pre-face-lift model, this SUV's climate control knobs are small, although you can now also adjust your A/C via the updated central screen. There's excessive noise from the rear climate system, especially if you're sitting in the third row. Another source of elevated noise is the windshield, which produces a distinct roar from wind noise at highway speeds.
In-cabin tech
Storage & cargo
Equipped with the 5.3-liter V8, the Tahoe can tow up to 8,400 pounds. While the 6.2-liter V8 and the fuel-efficient 3.0-liter turbo inline-six diesel tow slightly less at 8,200 pounds.
Value
The Tahoe's bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties are fairly standard at three years/36,000 miles and five years/60,000 miles, respectively. More impressive is Chevy's roadside assistance for five years/60,000 miles. You'll also get your first oil change for free.
MPG
We also tested an RST with a turbodiesel and it returned just under 21 mpg over 447 miles. That's impressive for a vehicle this large and just 1 mpg below the EPA's estimate. Given its frugality and abundance of low-end torque, the Duramax seems like the way to go.
It should also be noted the 5.3-liter engine in the Tahoe does not require premium gasoline, while the Ford Expedition's turbocharged engine recommends it. Chevrolet offers a more powerful 6.2-liter V8 engine that's estimated to get 16 mpg combined with 4WD.

2026 Chevrolet Tahoe trim level differences
[Editor's note: The following unofficial information is based on last year's Tahoe. We expect the 2026 model will have a similar lineup and we'll update this section once we have complete information.] The Chevrolet Tahoe is a three-row full-size SUV that seats eight passengers in most trim levels. (A nine-seat configuration is optional on the LS, and some trims have a seven-seat layout.) It's offered in six trim levels: LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier and High Country. The base engine is a 5.3-liter V8 (355 horsepower, 383 lb-ft). Rear-wheel drive is standard for most models, and four-wheel drive is available on all trim levels and is included with the Z71.
Which Tahoe trim does Edmunds recommend?
Chevrolet hasn't released official information on the 2026 Tahoe as of this writing. We'll update our recommendation if anything changes, but based on last year's Tahoe, we'd recommend the LT trim level. Sure, the base LS is decently equipped and is available with nine-passenger seating (front-row bench!), but the LT's extra features and options are worth paying extra for.
