Overview

Versatility is the Suburban's specialty. It's Chevrolet's largest SUV that can seat seven, eight or nine passengers. It can swallow more cargo than any other SUV in its class, along with its GMC sibling, the Yukon XL. The big Chevy can also tow over 8,000 pounds, which is plenty for most SUV owners. The Suburban offers a choice of three engines that include a stout 6.2-liter V8 and an efficient turbodiesel engine. However, all that size and power doesn't come cheap, and the Suburban starts at a price similar to the BMW X5's. Because of its refresh last year, there aren't many changes for 2026.
Edmunds spotlight: Big size, big money
Although $65,000 isn't cheap, the Suburban's base LS trim is one of the most affordable ways to get into an SUV of its size, which is among the largest in the market. But you aren't just paying for size — the LS comes standard with large dual display screens, two handy 120-volt household-style power outlets, and a large package of helpful driver assist features. The smaller Tahoe is a few thousand less but provides less cargo space. If you have a big budget, you can spend $90K on the top High Country model. But at that price, you might want to get into something that offers more luxury, like the GMC Yukon XL or Jeep Grand Wagoneer L.
Competitors to consider
Few automakers make yacht-sized SUVs, but most are compelling alternatives to the Suburban. The GMC Yukon XL is the same size, has the same engines and offers similar features. However, the GMC is more expensive and has distinct styling. The Expedition Max is the Suburban's main rival. It was redesigned for 2025 and packs a powerful standard engine. But its price gets high if you opt for a trim level that's above the base Active model. The Jeep Wagoneer L, which is the longer version of the Wagoneer, was updated for 2026. It boasts a premium look and superior off-road capability. The pricier Grand Wagoneer L is more luxurious. The Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada are also alternatives but have less cargo space due to their shorter length. For a detailed review, check out our test team's Expert Rating below.
Edmunds Expert Rating

Performance
We're impressed by the Suburban's braking power and composure. In our testing it came to a stop from 60 mph in just 122 feet, which is exceptional for a large three-row SUV. This is still a hefty vehicle, however, especially when the road gets curvy. The Suburban is well balanced and can handle sharp turns, but the steering lacks feedback. It prefers to stay straight, which is helpful if you plan to tow.
Comfort
Elsewhere, the Suburban can't overcome its truck-like nature. The leather front seats are soft and wide with available power lumbar adjustment, but overall comfort is lacking. Some of our drivers found them too flat and unsupportive. The climate control system seems overworked at most temperatures.
Interior
Getting in and out is no problem. Step up through the huge door openings and there's easy access to all three rows. The driving position is high, a necessity to see over the massive hood. The seat and steering wheel are highly adjustable, but there's no getting around the thick roof pillars that create significant blind spots.
Technology
The Super Cruise hands-free driving system is available on most trim levels and works well, especially on long road trips. Most driver aids also performed well. The adaptive cruise control system was the exception; sometimes it reacted slowly to vehicles either entering or leaving the Suburban's lane, leading to abrupt behavior.
Storage
Towing shouldn't be a problem for the Suburban. A maximum rating of 8,200 pounds is enough for a medium-to-large size trailer, and plentiful towing tech features are available.
Fuel Economy
Value
The Suburban comes with a three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. It also has generous six-year/100,000-mile rust protection and five-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance, and the first scheduled service is free provided you use it before the one-year/10,000-mile mark.
Wildcard
It does have personality, though. In any trim level you choose, the Suburban has powerful engines, loads of cargo space, and strong towing capacity. If having family adventures is high on your priority list, the Suburban can certainly accommodate trips to the mountains, or quality time on the lake, for years to come. Just be prepared to accept the downsides that come along with it.
2026 Chevrolet Suburban trim level differences
The 2026 Chevrolet Suburban is a three-row full-size SUV that is essentially a stretched version of the Chevy Tahoe, offering more passenger and cargo room. Most versions seat eight passengers, though a nine-seat configuration is optional on the LS, and some trims have a seven-seat layout.
Which Suburban trim does Edmunds recommend?
The LT trim is our suggestion because it comes loaded with a long list of features but won't break the bank. The money you save with the LT can be put toward optional packages like the Comfort and Advanced Technology packages. But if you want the powerful 6.2-liter V8 and have the budget for it, get the RST because it's the most affordable way to get that big V8.
