The Wrangler Unlimited with the 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain gives you pleasing power and the ability to drive about 22 miles on all-electric power on a full battery. All of the typical Wrangler attributes are intact too. However, the 4xe commands a big price, and its green cred is dubious unless you can recharge frequently.

Overview

No vehicle captures the spirit of adventure quite like the go-anywhere, do-anything Jeep Wrangler. And when you choose the Wrangler 4xe ("four-by-e") plug-in hybrid, you can go anywhere and do anything purely on electricity. Granted, the Wrangler 4xe's EPA-estimated electric range of 22 miles isn't much to brag about, but if you keep the battery charged, it definitely helps this electrified Jeep to tread lightly.

To create the 2023 Wrangler 4xe, Jeep pairs a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors, a battery pack, an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. Together, these components produce 375 horsepower. However, once you've used up the battery charge, this plug-in hybrid Jeep gets just 20 mpg, which is equal to or worse than the fuel economy figures for all Wranglers except for the V6 with a manual gearbox and the mighty Wrangler Rubicon 392. As you can probably tell, the key to making a Wrangler 4xe purchase worth it is to keep that battery charged up. Otherwise, the price premium isn't worth it.
Of course, any Wrangler you choose offers the off-roading performance you expect combined with a removable top and doors to let the outdoors in. And with the Wrangler 4xe, you can enjoy your immersion with nature in complete, blissful and near total silence. Want to learn more? Be sure to read our Expert Rating below to get an in-depth analysis of the Wrangler from our testing team.
What's it like to live with?
When Jeep last redesigned the Wrangler for the 2018 model year, we performed an 18-month long-term test of the iconic off-roader. It did not have the Wrangler 4xe's plug-in hybrid powertrain, but our experience with a V6-powered Rubicon might still prove instructive. If you want to find out what it's like to live with this Jeep, check out our long-term Wrangler road test.

Good
7.8
out of 10
We drove the 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7.5/10
How does the Wrangler 4xe drive? The 4xe, with its turbocharged four-cylinder engine augmented with a plug-in hybrid system, boasts 375 hp. That's a significant boost over the Wrangler's base V6 and regular turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Our fully charged test Wrangler Rubicon 4xe accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds. That's respectable, although the regular four-cylinder Wrangler isn't far behind (7.4 seconds).
The extra weight of the 4xe powertrain (our test Wrangler weighed 5,275 pounds) does take a toll on braking performance. In a simulated-panic stop from 60 mph, our Rubicon 4xe needed 150 feet to come to a stop — that's considerably longer than most SUVs need. Otherwise, the brakes are pretty consistent and easy to use in typical driving.
The Wrangler Rubicon's off-road prowess is impressive thanks to its big tires, disconnecting front stabilizer bar and lockable differentials. The 4xe has slightly less departure clearance than a regular Wrangler due to the extra protection needed for the battery, but we think that's a small trade-off for what you gain.

Comfort
7.5/10
How comfortable is the Wrangler 4xe? The robust construction that gives the Wrangler its ready-for-anything personality also contributes to a rough ride — especially in the off-road-ready Rubicon trim. The boxy design and large tires create a heap of wind and road noise, especially with the optional power-retractable soft top. We did notice that the extra weight of the 4xe powertrain helped to settle the Wrangler's ride on the highway a little.
The Wrangler doesn't place much importance on passenger comfort, but among the highlights, the front seats are well shaped and remain livable on long trips. The rear bench is flatter and firmer, but it reclines a bit. We like the effective climate system, which also features rear air vents.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? Because of the Wrangler's high stance, most people will need the grab handles to get inside. Once inside, you'll find the Wrangler Unlimited has a decent amount of passenger space, but it's by no means roomy. Though there are many controls (especially in the Rubicon and its numerous adjustments for off-road driving), the layout is refreshingly intuitive. The slender pillars and square windows greatly reduce blind spots.
The driving position is fairly upright, but there's a useful range of adjustment from the seat and steering wheel. Of course, one of the Wrangler's most appealing features is its removable top. You can get a soft top, a hardtop or the handy (but expensive) Sky One-Touch power top that allows you to quickly get that open-roof experience.

Technology
7.5/10
How’s the tech? The 8.4-inch Uconnect system offers sharp graphics and quick responsiveness. There are plenty of easy-to-access charging ports (USB and USB-C), and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration is supported. Unfortunately, wireless charging is not available, and even the upgraded Alpine audio system is a bit underpowered for our tastes.
Our test vehicle was fitted with the Wrangler's optional driver aids including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and rear parking sensors. All the systems worked well in our testing, with no false positives from the collision warning system.

Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The Jeep's narrow body is an off-road strength, but it does limit cargo capacity compared to competitors such as the Toyota 4Runner. Even so, the rear seats fold neatly into the floor if you want to carry extra stuff. And there are even six rugged tie-down points and an underfloor compartment. Up front, there aren't many places to store small items, and the door pockets are nothing more than shallow nets.
Car seats are easy to fit in the Unlimited as long as they're not too bulky — you might have to move the front seat forward to fit a rear-facing seat. The Wrangler can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is decent for the class, and can be flat-towed behind a motorhome.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? If you can plug the 4xe in on a regular basis, and you've got a relatively short commute, it can make good sense. The EPA's estimate for electric range with the 4xe is 22 miles before the engine comes to life. We managed to only squeeze 18.7 miles on our best attempt.
The Wrangler 4xe's electrical efficiency — how far it can drive per kWh of electricity — is pretty poor too, or at least compared to other plug-in hybrids. But you also need to temper your expectations given that the Wrangler Rubicon is shaped like a brick and has big knobby tires.
After the electric power runs out, the 4xe is only rated at 20 mpg combined. Ironically, that's worse than almost every engine in the Wrangler lineup with the exception of the V6 with the manual transmission and the V8. On our mixed-driving evaluation route, we achieved 20.2 mpg after running out of electricity.

Value
7/10
Is the Wrangler 4xe a good value? For the 4xe to be a good value, you'll have to be a very specific buyer. Depending on which trim level you go with, the 4xe powertrain can add more than $10,000 to the price of a Wrangler. Thankfully, the 4xe Wrangler qualifies for the $7,500 federal tax credit (as well as a number of state and local incentives), though those incentives won't apply to every buyer. The EPA-estimated 22 miles of all-electric range should be enough for most short commutes, so that will help with the cost of gas.
Build quality is, as it is on other Wranglers, distinct and satisfying. The materials are attractive and have a good tactile feel, but it has the same interior as much less expensive Wranglers. Jeep's warranty coverage and roadside assistance are average.

Wildcard
10/10
Few vehicles are as distinctive as the Jeep Wrangler. This is one of the few no-compromise off-road vehicles left. Take that and combine it with a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain and you've got a distinctive vehicle by pretty much every standard.
2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe trim level differences
Jeep offers the 2023 Wrangler 4xe in a four-door, or Unlimited, body style with a removable top. The 4xe's plug-in hybrid powertrain produces 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque and employs an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. Powertrain modes include Hybrid, Electric and E-Save, and Jeep says you can recharge the battery in about 12 hours using a standard household outlet. The Wrangler 4xe comes in Willys, Sahara, Rubicon and High Altitude trim levels. The highlights of each follow below.
Which Wrangler 4xe trim does Edmunds recommend?
If you're going to buy a Wrangler, you might as well get the one that offers the most off-roading capability. So that means you need the 4xe Rubicon trim level. The Rubicon comes with a more capable four-wheel-drive system, heavy-duty front and rear axles with locking differentials, a disconnecting front sway bar, and 33-inch all-terrain tires. And if you don't know what any of these things are, perhaps you'd rather get a Honda CR-V or something.

2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Unlimited Sahara 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
I’ve had mostly BMWs and Audis over the years and cycled through a few TJs and a YJ as a weekend car. I’ve been driving my 4Xe as a daily for 6 weeks now and love it. It’s quiet, comfortable and generally fun to drive. Not a rocket but definitely quick enough to merge. It is loud on the highway and something to consider if you travel long distances. For me and my short commute, it’s … perfect. I got 900 miles on my first tank of gas and average 32 MPG in hybrid. With everything going on in the world, it just makes me smile. Is it for everyone? No.
Update, 7 months and 3,600 trouble free miles. I also took it offroading and loved the regen braking, quiet ride and torque. Sorry to those having trouble with theirs but still loving mine!
Update, 17K miles, zero problem other than leaking shocks, replaced under warranty. I would suggest reading these reviews carefully. Many complaining of FORM simply do not understand the technology. It's not purely temperature related and something ALL PHEVs go through. If there were any reason not to buy a Jeep, I'd say it's less the vehicle and more the dealership experience. Mine is abysmal.
2023 Jeep Rubicon 4xe Does Not Disappoint

2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
Excellent new rig from Jeep.
By keeping it in hybrid most of the time I'm averaging 26mpg in city and 30+mpg highway - a major improvement over my old gas powered TJ and JK rigs with their average of 13 mpg on a good day.
Engine doesn't feel like I've traded any power for this efficiency, which is fantastic. It took a bit to get used to how the engine sounds, but that's a me problem. … You're not going to get that big, powerful Jeep rumble with a PHEV.
So far it's been a dream on light trails and on the beach, as well. I haven't tested the towing capacity yet, but expect it will handle my trailer just fine.
We have a lot of mixed terrain and slick weather where I live and the Jeep has been stable to drive: hugging the pavement when it's icy, surefooted in snow, good traction in wet sand, and solid on rain-slicked winter roads. It hasn't given me any problems on hills at all, though the real test will be when I go over the pass for the first time. I expect it will handle that well also.
One aspect of having a PHEV Jeep that I find delightful is the ability to put it in esave mode and then run on electric once I reach the trailhead. It's been a pleasure to do some light off roading in relative quiet and actually hear nature instead of a loud engine. There is a tradeoff in my gas use efficiency when I do that, of course, but it's worth it.
Just like my standard shift Jeeps, I expect choosing the correct dealer is going to make a difference with these Jeeps going forward. With my stick shift TJ and JK, finding a dealer in this decade that still understood stick shifts and their quirks was essential. Now I think finding a dealer that understands the combined complexities of a hybrid engine and a rig built for off road use will be key to owner happiness.
My only personal gripe with this Jeep so far has nothing to do with the rig - it's that I detest the color blue ;) Happily, a quick de-badging session this summer when it's not so cold will take care of that.
My only broad gripe with this Jeep is the price point! This Rubicon feels like it would be more appropriately priced in the $50K range new but I see it being sold as high as $80K in some areas.
Overall, 10/10, absolutely pleased with my purchase. Can't wait to see how the models continue to improve and innovate as Jeep gets more time in the electric vehicle space.

2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Unlimited Rubicon 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
Bought this Jeep last August 2021and it has already died on us twice. First time it happened was December last year while my son was driving on the highway the engine just died-all electronics and mechanical- just completely dead, thankfully my son was able to get it on the shoulder and nothing happened to him. Then this past weekend it went dead again despite being charged over nght and … being used everyday. The door wouldn't open with the key fob and the engine wouldn't start at all. I gave it a jumpstart and the hybrid battery was charged 99% and the car battery readout was 12.2.
We drove it to the jeep dealership where we bought it and it's been there for days and they still can't figure out what's wrong.
If I can just give this back I will, It's a nice toy but not worth the hassle and the danger.
Plug-in convertible — loads of fun!

2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Unlimited Sahara 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
I’ve had zero concerns with my Sahara 4xe after 13k miles. It has all the non-drivetrain DIY improvements you can make on all Wranglers. I keep the roof and doors off from May-October and I get about 27 miles of pure electricity on a charge. The engine sounds pretty rough the first 10k, but with the oil change it starts to sound a bit better. Much quieter than my ‘17 Sahara. For … long trips it isn’t going to get even decent gas mileage, but for the daily driver you can really cut back on gas consumption. The OEM Bridgestone Duelers tires aren’t anything special and I would recommend getting a more rugged set if you are doing anything more than gravel.
The concerns I had when I got it in August ‘22 were reports of the wrangler 4xe suddenly turning off while driving. This turned out to be a decent amount of cars with loose fuses. I checked mine and there were probably 10 or so loose (not good!) about a week after purchase. They’ve stayed in place since then. Another big concern that people would mention was a F.O.R.M. Notification. This meant that the car would not turn off the engine even when the battery was full. This primarily occurred when the gas would start to degrade (I’ve gone more than 5 weeks at a time without filling up even a 1/4 tank), or regular oil service was due and the oil was past prime. Getting the oil service would clear it and expending all but an 1/8 of a tank then refilling it would clear the other FORM notification.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, so we've included reviews for other years of the Wrangler 4xe since its last redesign.
