The Wrangler Unlimited with the 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain gives you pleasing power and the ability to drive about 22 miles on all-electric power on a full battery. All of the typical Wrangler attributes are intact too. However, the 4xe commands a big price, and its green cred is dubious unless you can recharge frequently.

The Wrangler's best potential fuel economy comes from the Wrangler 4xe. It has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and plug-in hybrid componentry. That combination produces 375 horsepower plus about 22 miles of all-electric range on a full battery charge. Frequently recharging can really help save on gas. But once you use up the battery, the 4xe hybrid only gets around 20 mpg, which is no better than the Wrangler's regular V6.
Prefer fuel swilling to fuel sipping? The Wrangler Rubicon 392 should satisfy. For this model Jeep drops in a thumping 470-hp 6.4-liter (392-cubic-inch) V8 engine. Hammer the gas and you'll rocket from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. Impressively, the Rubicon 392 retains all of the Rubicon's impressive low-speed off-road ability too.
However, the Wrangler is no longer the only big fish in its small pond. In recent years the Wrangler and Toyota 4Runner have been joined by other rugged SUVs. The Land Rover Defender is packed with sophisticated off-road tech while the Ford Bronco gives you Ford's take on what an off-roading SUV should be. Even with the added competition, the Wrangler is still a one-of-a-kind driving experience. Read our Expert Rating below to get our test team's take on the Wrangler's performance, comfort and more.
What's it like to live with?
We purchased a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and put it through a series of adventures over the course of two years and 50,000 miles. That doesn't mean the Wrangler is without its stress points. Check out what it's like to live with the Wrangler by reading our long-term Wrangler road test.

Good
7.8
out of 10
We drove the 2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7.5/10
How does the Wrangler 4xe drive? The 4xe, with its turbocharged four-cylinder engine augmented with a plug-in hybrid system, boasts 375 hp. That's a significant boost over the Wrangler's base V6 and regular turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Our fully charged test Wrangler Rubicon 4xe accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds. That's respectable, although the regular four-cylinder Wrangler isn't far behind (7.4 seconds).
The extra weight of the 4xe powertrain (our test Wrangler weighed 5,275 pounds) does take a toll on braking performance. In a simulated-panic stop from 60 mph, our Rubicon 4xe needed 150 feet to come to a stop — that's considerably longer than most SUVs need. Otherwise, the brakes are pretty consistent and easy to use in typical driving.
The Wrangler Rubicon's off-road prowess is impressive thanks to its big tires, disconnecting front stabilizer bar and lockable differentials. The 4xe has slightly less departure clearance than a regular Wrangler due to the extra protection needed for the battery, but we think that's a small trade-off for what you gain.

Comfort
7.5/10
How comfortable is the Wrangler 4xe? The robust construction that gives the Wrangler its ready-for-anything personality also contributes to a rough ride — especially in the off-road-ready Rubicon trim. The boxy design and large tires create a heap of wind and road noise, especially with the optional power-retractable soft top. We did notice that the extra weight of the 4xe powertrain helped to settle the Wrangler's ride on the highway a little.
The Wrangler doesn't place much importance on passenger comfort, but among the highlights, the front seats are well shaped and remain livable on long trips. The rear bench is flatter and firmer, but it reclines a bit. We like the effective climate system, which also features rear air vents.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? Because of the Wrangler's high stance, most people will need the grab handles to get inside. Once inside, you'll find the Wrangler Unlimited has a decent amount of passenger space, but it's by no means roomy. Though there are many controls (especially in the Rubicon and its numerous adjustments for off-road driving), the layout is refreshingly intuitive. The slender pillars and square windows greatly reduce blind spots.
The driving position is fairly upright, but there's a useful range of adjustment from the seat and steering wheel. Of course, one of the Wrangler's most appealing features is its removable top. You can get a soft top, a hardtop or the handy (but expensive) Sky One-Touch power top that allows you to quickly get that open-roof experience.

Technology
7.5/10
How’s the tech? The 8.4-inch Uconnect system offers sharp graphics and quick responsiveness. There are plenty of easy-to-access charging ports (USB and USB-C), and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration is supported. Unfortunately, wireless charging is not available, and even the upgraded Alpine audio system is a bit underpowered for our tastes.
Our test vehicle was fitted with the Wrangler's optional driver aids including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and rear parking sensors. All the systems worked well in our testing, with no false positives from the collision warning system.

Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The Jeep's narrow body is an off-road strength, but it does limit cargo capacity compared to competitors such as the Toyota 4Runner. Even so, the rear seats fold neatly into the floor if you want to carry extra stuff. And there are even six rugged tie-down points and an underfloor compartment. Up front, there aren't many places to store small items, and the door pockets are nothing more than shallow nets.
Car seats are easy to fit in the Unlimited as long as they're not too bulky — you might have to move the front seat forward to fit a rear-facing seat. The Wrangler can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is decent for the class, and can be flat-towed behind a motorhome.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? If you can plug the 4xe in on a regular basis, and you've got a relatively short commute, it can make good sense. The EPA's estimate for electric range with the 4xe is 22 miles before the engine comes to life. We managed to only squeeze 18.7 miles on our best attempt.
The Wrangler 4xe's electrical efficiency — how far it can drive per kWh of electricity — is pretty poor too, or at least compared to other plug-in hybrids. But you also need to temper your expectations given that the Wrangler Rubicon is shaped like a brick and has big knobby tires.
After the electric power runs out, the 4xe is only rated at 20 mpg combined. Ironically, that's worse than almost every engine in the Wrangler lineup with the exception of the V6 with the manual transmission and the V8. On our mixed-driving evaluation route, we achieved 20.2 mpg after running out of electricity.

Value
7/10
Is the Wrangler 4xe a good value? For the 4xe to be a good value, you'll have to be a very specific buyer. Depending on which trim level you go with, the 4xe powertrain can add more than $10,000 to the price of a Wrangler. Thankfully, the 4xe Wrangler qualifies for the $7,500 federal tax credit (as well as a number of state and local incentives), though those incentives won't apply to every buyer. The EPA-estimated 22 miles of all-electric range should be enough for most short commutes, so that will help with the cost of gas.
Build quality is, as it is on other Wranglers, distinct and satisfying. The materials are attractive and have a good tactile feel, but it has the same interior as much less expensive Wranglers. Jeep's warranty coverage and roadside assistance are average.

Wildcard
10/10
Few vehicles are as distinctive as the Jeep Wrangler. This is one of the few no-compromise off-road vehicles left. Take that and combine it with a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain and you've got a distinctive vehicle by pretty much every standard.
2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe trim level differences
The Jeep Wrangler is an SUV available as a two-door model or as a four-door model called the Unlimited. The two-door Wrangler is available in two main trim levels: Sport and Rubicon. There are also a few subtrims based on the Sport: Willys Sport, Sport S, Willys and Altitude. The four-door Wrangler Unlimited offers the additional choice of the Sahara, the 4xe plug-in hybrid (Sahara or Rubicon trim only) and the Rubicon 392. Most Wranglers come with a part-time four-wheel-drive system with low-range gearing. A full-time 4WD system is optional. Compare the 2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe trim levels in-depth.
Which Wrangler 4xe trim does Edmunds recommend?
The Rubicon remains the Wrangler to get. Its enhanced off-roading hardware opens up a world of possible adventures whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned conqueror.

2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Unlimited Rubicon 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
I purchased a Wrangler Rubicon 4xe in November 2021. I currently have 4500 miles on it and it has been nothing but fun! I live in a cold area and never went into the Fuel Oil Refresh mode all winter. If you take the time to learn to drive the 4xe it will save you money on gas as well. In town I get around 26 miles of full electric range and when in esave mode on the highway I get … around 22mpg. Since I am not always driving on the highway and don't have a commute I am averaging around 650 - 675 miles per tank with nightly charging. I say that isn't bad. I bought it for the torque and hp. Jeep Wranglers are not meant to be fuel efficient but the hybrid definitely helps some if you learn the tips and tricks. Don't expect it to be a full EV or even what you may think a hybrid is and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. If you do end up buying one take the time to learn the tips and tricks on how to get the most efficiency out of the power train. Off road it is hands down the best Jeep or for that matter vehicle I have ever been off road with. That includes the stalwart Tacoma and 4Runner.

2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Unlimited High Altitude 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
I really like my 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Unlimited Sahara High Altitude. I agree with the concerns about fuel economy but if you live near work (like I do) you can charge this vehicle overnight with a regular outlet (120 volt) and travel to work and back on 100% electric power. Long trips quickly deplete the batteries after about 20 miles. Overall I have averaged 27 MPG during my 12000 … miles of ownership. Not bad. Make sure that the shop resets the oil monitor after an oil change. If the Jeep thinks the oil is old it goes into oil recirculation mode and won't switch to electric mode. Found a guide on the internet for how to reset it if the shop forgets.
The leather seats on the high altitude are comfortable, and the suspension is softer than on a Rubicon, which is a good thing in my view. The steering is truck-like and requires constant input from the driver. The interior noise is not too bad except at highway speed, which is normal for Wranglers. The electric motor is smooth and quiet. I am not a big fan of the 2.0 turbo gas engine but that is the only choice for the 4xe. It spools up and buzzes, it is loud at drive throughs, so hopefully your electric motor will be charged.
The looks of the exterior are amazing. A couple people observed that it looks like a G Wagon especially in silver with the color matched roof, body, fenders and bumpers. I would not take this Jeep off-road for fear of scratching up my beautiful ride. It is more of a city Jeep. It handles snow well. Overall I am a big fan of this vehicle.
Love It

2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Unlimited Sahara 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
I’ve had mostly BMWs and Audis over the years and cycled through a few TJs and a YJ as a weekend car. I’ve been driving my 4Xe as a daily for 6 weeks now and love it. It’s quiet, comfortable and generally fun to drive. Not a rocket but definitely quick enough to merge. It is loud on the highway and something to consider if you travel long distances. For me and my short commute, it’s … perfect. I got 900 miles on my first tank of gas and average 32 MPG in hybrid. With everything going on in the world, it just makes me smile. Is it for everyone? No.
Update, 7 months and 3,600 trouble free miles. I also took it offroading and loved the regen braking, quiet ride and torque. Sorry to those having trouble with theirs but still loving mine!
Update, 17K miles, zero problem other than leaking shocks, replaced under warranty. I would suggest reading these reviews carefully. Many complaining of FORM simply do not understand the technology. It's not purely temperature related and something ALL PHEVs go through. If there were any reason not to buy a Jeep, I'd say it's less the vehicle and more the dealership experience. Mine is abysmal.
A recall changed EVERYTHING for the better!

2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Unlimited High Altitude 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
Just so everyone knows, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe has one recall and one customer service bulletin. Once you take your vehicle in for these repairs you can drive in electric mode for ages on just electric. My vehicle now stays in electric by default, uses no gas for my 26 mile roundtrip drive to work, AND I have achieved 52 mpg!!! All you have to do is take it in. Also, if you have … never bought something in the first model year then you'll never understand that things show up in real world driving that couldn't be simulated on thousands of miles of computerized testing. You'll find that there is never a vehicle without flaws in the initial production run...you just have to be patient and know what you're getting into.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, so we've included reviews for other years of the Wrangler 4xe since its last redesign.

- ParkView Rear Back Up Camera
- Displays on the center console what is behind you. Rearview cameras aren't new, but they are a welcome addition in the Wrangler.
- Blind-Spot and Cross-Path Detection
- Warns the driver of other cars in the blind spots and approaching cars from out of the driver's view while in reverse.
- ParkSense Rear Park Assist System
- Gives audio alerts when approaching objects from the rear, helping to minimize low-speed bumps in parking scenarios.
