2024 GMC HUMMER EV SUV

[FALLING RAIN] EMME HALL: With all of the rain that we've been getting in California, we have so much mud! And look at what I have to drive! That's right, it's the Hummer EV SUV. But here's the bummer, you guys. GMC isn't going to let me drive it. I know! They say it's too muddy and they don't want to mess up the course. Me, Emme Hall, not getting muddy, oh, it's killing me! But listen, I will get to drive it on the pavement, so don't worry, I will get some driving impressions for you. So stay tuned, because we've got a lot of cool action coming up just for you. [MUSIC PLAYING] Now, don't just think that GMC like-- [WHISTLE] --enclose the bed of the truck and boom-- [EXPLOSION] --you'll have the SUV, because that's not quite true. Now, yes, we still have the same front end with the Hummer logo front and center. Yes, we still have a giant tires and wheels. This one doesn't even have the off-road package, and I'm still rolling on 35s. But the cool thing about this, is they have shortened the wheelbase of this guy. The wheelbase here is 9 inches shorter. And it's shorter overall. So on the whole, this thing is much more maneuverable than the truck. And honestly, I like these proportions better. I think that this vehicle looks way, way better than the truck. But you still have the same overall width. So what that means, is when you open this gate, like, check this out. It's so wide, it just keeps like opening and it keeps opening, it keeps opening. I mean, look, it's so big! But you do have a lot of space here. I mean, this is all of our gear for this travel shoot. And I mean, we don't have a ton of gear, so we have a lot of space left over. But I do think that careful packing, you can get a lot of stuff into your Hummer SUV. Now if you're planning on towing with your Hummer, just remember that this is pretty darn high. So you're probably going to need to have a drop hitch to get that tow ball a little bit lower so that your trailer isn't like this. Ask me how I know. Tried to do it with the truck, didn't really work. [MUSIC PLAYING] So the interior of the Hummer, I mean, it's a pretty nice place to be, as long as you like this gray green color. But what's really cool, are the graphics that GMC has incorporated here into this really large center infotainment system, as well as on the digital gauge cluster. So check this out. When I go like into my driving modes, you get these great animations. I mean, my mode, right, that's super cool. But I love the off-road. Like, you're like off-roading on Mars! I just love it! Everything's really clear and really, really crisp. You can tell they spend a lot of money here, and I think it is money well spent. And I also like that GMC has spent some time and given us some thoughtful features in the off-road pages. So for example, here in this off-road, first of all, I have a lat and long. I have a compass, and I have my altitude. And those are all really useful features for when you're out in the middle of nowhere and maybe you're a little lost and you're not sure where you are on the map. Well, here, you've got lat log, so you can find out where you are. You've got a larger compass. Here, some more information on your altitude. You've got your tires, your steering angle. I mean, there's just a lot of great features that you're going to want while you're off the beaten path, right? The screen is really quick. It responds to my inputs very fast, which I enjoy. So there's not a lot of lag time. And they've also done a really nice job down here with these buttons in terms of designing real estate so that it's all usable. For example, I love heated seats, so I just press this little button here, and then I get two more for my heating and my cooled, and that's where I actually control it. So they're able to get kind of three buttons out of one, which I think is just really good design. Now having said that, does the heated seat turn off before I want it to? I mean, yes, but I really love hot cross buns, so I'm a little bit of an outlier in that way. But here's the kicker, you guys. This vehicle it's like $105,000, including destination. And like-- [TAPPING] --that's some plastic, right? [TAPPING] Ooh, that's plastic. Ooh, ooh, there a lot of plastic in here. I mean, the material quality, it's not great, and it's $105,000. Like, you can tell all of the money has been put into the Ultium battery pack, and all of the little crab walk and WTF mode and everything, because it certainly has not been spent in the interior materials. But having said all that, my absolute favorite thing about the Hummer is that it is a convertible! These panels come off and they go in the frunk. And convertibles are rad. So that's my favorite part. [MUSIC PLAYING] So you see that person driving that SUV right there? Yeah, it's not me. Oh! Like I said, GMC decided that it was way too much mud for mere mortals. I mean, it's not like I've wheeled vehicles through worse, but hey, not my call. [SLOSHING] Here comes the mighty Hummer. It's got a battery pack, and it's fully electric. Going into the water. It can ford all the water. At any rate, all I can tell you here, is that the rig doesn't look like it's having any trouble in the mud. But I can't tell you what it feels like to drive, since well, I'm not driving it. But I am super excited to get this thing on my home turf out in the desert, because it actually has way better off-roading specs than the truck. The 49 degree approach angle is the same, but the shorter wheelbase and length means that the departure angle is also up to 49 degrees, and the breakover angle is up to 34 degrees. Now this SUV can do the crab walk, where it moves forward and diagonally at the same time. And it's got the rear steering, which makes really short work of the tight turnarounds. But most importantly, the SUV comes with a spare tire. [CHORAL SINGING] Oh, my gosh, thank you GMC! Now the truck you're seeing here has the extreme off-road package with 35 inch Goodyear mud terrain tires, obviously, skid plates galore, 17 cameras, including cameras under the body, as well as front and rear lockers. Now currently, you have to push that front locker button for five seconds in order to get it to engage, but GMC did tell me that an over-the-air update is going to be coming soon to make that just a little bit more immediate. [MUSIC PLAYING] So GMC has actually put us on a curvy road, which would be super fun in a sports car, but you know what, the SUV here is doing it. The problem, is that you're so wide and this lane is so narrow, you really, really, really have to be paying attention. And there is a lot of physics going on here. I mean, yeah, I've got air suspension and all that stuff, but I feel plenty of body roll. And the weight of this vehicle, and I'm a little afraid of the brakes and the weight, so I'm not willing to dive into these corners. I mean, this would be way fun and like a Mercedes AMG GLS, because that thing can just get it in the turns. This thing, I am a little tentative. And I got to say like the rain doesn't help either. [MUSIC PLAYING] So there's a few key differences here in the Hummer SUV versus the truck, right. And the first of them that you're going to have to deal with is the battery pack. So instead of having the larger 205 kilowatt hour, this is 170. And that's because the wheelbase is shorter, so there's not enough room for all the modules. So your range does decrease from 350 miles to 300 miles. But the good news, is that you can still charge super fast. This has 800 volt architecture, which means it can accept a peak charge of 300 kilowatts. Now, you're not going to get that for your entire charging session, but that will be your peak. Still, it's fast enough that you can get a 100 miles of range in just 14 minutes at a DC fast charger. Now when it comes to charging at home, the SUV'S got a little trick up its sleeve with a 19.2 kilowatt onboard charger. So what that does, is that takes the AC power from your house and it converts it into DC power. And 19.2 kilowatts is pretty darn fast. Now you can also use this vehicle to charge another EV. It's only at six kilowatts, but look, man, if you're in a bind you're in a bind, right? The SUV also has three electric motors. We've got two in the rear and one on the front. And together, those produce 830 horsepower. It's a little bit less than the truck, but you still have the 1,200 pound foot of motor torque, and that is amazing! So I've got some drive modes here that I can access through this little dial. Right now, I'm just keeping it in normal mode, because we've got a lot of rain. And there's a few things that I really like about how this vehicle drives. I mean, number one, I love that I can dial in my regen from like none at all to something that's kind of medium to really, really high. And I love high regen, because I can number one, get free electrons, and I love getting stuff for free. And it brings the vehicle to a complete stop, which I mean, come on, this thing weighs, I don't know how much it weighs, but it weighs a lot. So the fact that the regen can bring it to a complete stop is pretty darn cool. I also love the steering. It's nice and heavy, and I feel like with a vehicle of this size, I want some steering that's got a little bit of heft behind it. So I like the way that the steering is tuned. I also love the fact that I'm super high up. This is great. I can see everything. My passenger, I feel like he's at the moon, he's so far away from me, because the interior is so big. But having said that, like it's a pleasant place to spend some time. My problem with it though, is that it's just so inefficient. Like, there is a point where the weight of your vehicle and your battery size intersect for maximum efficiency, and this is not it. Right now I'm only getting 1.6 miles per kilowatt hour. Now if you look at the Rivian R1S, which is its nearest competitor, the EPA says that that's going to get about 2 miles per kilowatt hour. Now listen, I know I've only been driving this for about 100 miles and the EPA estimates are always different than what we get in the real world, but on first glance, this thing is pretty inefficient. And I bet it's very inefficient once you get it into the dirt. So I got to get this thing out for a full week of testing and report it to you, my loyal Edmunds viewers. There's a fair amount of wind noise, because let's face it, I'm driving a brick, right? It's going to be impossible to make that wind noise go away. It's just not going to happen. There's a thing called physics and dynamics and it is what it is. The vehicle that I'm driving right now does not have the off-road package. And I do have 22 inch wheels. But the tire size, even on the non off-road, are still 35. So yeah, I got giant 22 inch wheels, but then I have a ton of wall as well. So these are the nicest riding 22 inch wheels I've ever been in. Like, it is not harsh at all. It's great. Good choice, GMC. And the Hummer SUV also comes with Super Cruise. That is a hands-off driving system on various mapped roads. I highly doubt this backcountry road is a Super Cruise road, but let's see. Super Cruise unavailable. Yeah, that makes sense. But Super Cruise allows you to be hands off, eyes up. And they do that because there's a little camera right here in the steering wheel, so it knows if you're looking at your phone or reading a book or God forbid, asleep. It's really handy, especially when you're in really, really heavy stop and go traffic to just kind of let the vehicle take control while you are still paying attention. Because remember, there are no self-driving cars on the market today. There are only assisted driving cars. [MUSIC PLAYING] OK, now you guys didn't think that I was going to not do Watts to Freedom, right? It's WTF! All right, I am flooring it. My seat it's like vibrating. I have this cool music happening. I'm going to get the accelerator going. It tells me to floor it. And now it tells me to release the brake. Here we go, 3, 2, 1! [YELLING AND LAUGHING] Oh, sorry, that was a lot of braking. Ooh, though, nice! Because this thing is super heavy, and I was like, it's not going to break. But it did. Oh, my gosh. Can I do it again? I want to do it again. Let's do it again. Well, I feel two ways about today. [DOOR SLAMS] The bad way is that I did not get to drive in the mud. Like, what is up with that, GMC? Come on! It's me, Emme Hall, I know how to drive in the mud. However, did get to drive it on the pavement. I did get to do Watts to Freedom, and that was super fun. But my final take is like, look, if you're down to deciding between the pickup and the SUV, get the SUV. It looks better, it handles a little bit better, it's easier to drive it in smaller spaces. Like, this is the one that you want to get. I mean, you got to have $105,000 burning a hole in your pocket. And if you do, good on you, champion. But for now, I am Emme Hall.
